  • Resident Teacher Program Overview

    PGCPS Resident Teacher Programs are Maryland Approved Alternative Preparation Programs (MAAPP) designed for professionals interested in changing careers or recent college graduates with degrees in fields other than education. PGCPS Resident Teacher Programs are an alternate pathway to becoming a certified classroom teacher. They are intensive, accelerated teacher training programs that place credentialed, qualified educators in critical teacher shortage areas throughout the school system.

    We are looking for individuals with a college degree who demonstrate flexibility, initiative, and a commitment to learning and growing. Ideal candidates possess a relentless drive to improve student learning and set high expectations for themselves, their colleagues, and children. We are also making a particular effort to recruit a diverse pool of candidates who will use their professional experience, subject matter knowledge, and record of achievement to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of students in Prince George’s County.

    Notre Dame of Maryland University Special Education Dual-Certification Program

    Resident Teachers in this program will complete pre-service training and graduate-level coursework over the summer to become classroom ready on day one.  Additionally, these Resident Teachers complete rigorous coursework at Notre Dame of Maryland University which will lead to professional dual-certification and/or a Master’s Degree in Education. Participants will receive coaching support from a supervising teacher for the first quarter of the school year followed by high-quality mentoring support for the remainder of the two-year training program. Content areas for this program include:

    • Special Education & Elementary

    • Special Education & Secondary English

    • Special Education & Secondary History

    • Special Education & Secondary Mathematics or 

    • Special Education & Secondary Science (Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Space Sciences, Environmental Science, Physics)

    Teach For America

    Teach For America Resident Teachers complete a two-year training program starting as the teacher-of-record.  Teach For America Resident Teachers complete pre-service training over the summer in Philadelphia while gaining classroom teaching experience. Additionally, these Resident Teachers complete rigorous coursework at John’s Hopkins University which will lead to professional certification and/or a Master’s Degree in Education. Participants will receive two years of high-quality mentoring support. Content areas for this program include:

    • Biology (7-12) 

    • Early Childhood Education (PreK-3)

    • Elementary Education (grades 1-6) 

    • English (7-12) 

    • Mathematics (7-12) 

    • World Languages (PreK-12)

  • What are the MAAPP Phases?

    All Resident Teachers complete specific MAAPP phases intended to build teacher capacity to be effective in the classroom and that, ultimately, lead to a Maryland professional teaching certificate. During the two-year teacher training program, the Resident Teachers are eligible for a State-issued Resident Teacher Certificate. Completion of PGCPS Resident Teacher Program requirements will result in a Standard Professional Certificate. All PGCPS Resident Teacher Programs include the following MAAPP phases:


    • Web-based and face-to-face Information Sessions

    • Panel interviews of qualified applicants and selection of candidates who meet program-entry requirements


    • 6-8 weeks of intensive pre-service training over the summer designed to equip candidates with the foundational skills to be classroom-ready on day-1


    • 8-week supervised teaching internship involving classroom-based teaching and other school-related responsibilities.  

    • During the internship phase, candidates assume all of the normal responsibilities and duties of a classroom teacher in their school placements with guidance and assistance from a supervising teacher.  


    • 2-year teaching assignment along with additional professional learning opportunities and coursework

    • Resident Teachers receive intensive support from a full-release Mentor Teacher to help strengthen and refine their instructional practice.

    As we prepare to recruit for the 2020-21 Resident Teacher cohort, PGCPS will host a series of in-person and virtual Information Sessions. All in-person Information Sessions will be held from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at various schools and community organizations throughout the county.
