    Greetings Rosa L. Parks Family,

    A new school year presents opportunities for various beginnings – new faces, new students, for some new grade levels, and new materials. While there are changes coming to the county, this year, as in the past, we must concentrate on the processes that spur continuing advancement: evaluating what we have, determining what we can do to improve, and identifying what we need to make those improvements.  Keeping in line with the district’s charge to increasing student achievement, our theme this year is “This Year is going to Rock!” We are going to delve into our individual teaching practices to determine the unique “Rock Star” qualities we bring to our grade level teams and to the Rosa L. Parks’ community.  There will also be a continued focus on CULTURE, DATA, and PERFORMANCE. Keeping this in mind, we enter a new school year, with the following focus areas that will guide our work:

    • Maintain practices that support on-going collaboration and feedback from all stakeholders through the use of the collaborative planning rubric.
    • Continue the use of effective customer service and communication.
    • Complete book studies - Move Your Bus by Ron Clark and Mindset by Carol Dweck.
    • Continue use of the PBIS program as the school-wide behavior management too
    • Continue to build assessment literacy (i.e., MAP-Growth) and how to better use the data for instruction.
    • Maintain student data and track student progress consistently.
    • Use data from staff informal as well as formal feedback and coaching sessions to increase teacher impact and quality.
    • Focus on knowing the curriculum, understanding the standards for each grade level, knowing the strategies to teach the standards most effectively, use what is already known in the classrooms, and share with colleagues what worked and what did not – opportunities for growth.
    • Continue use of the Literacy/Numeracy Snapshot plan.
    • Focus on improving the performance of below grade level students through intentional planning.
    • Meet or exceed targets set for DRA, Map-Growth, and PARCC.

    I look forward to embarking on the new changes and shifts that are taking place at the district and school level, as a team. We are Rock Stars that cannot be stopped! We will have a successful year!

    Learning is a lifetime investment. Think about the deposits you have made in your child's education:

    • Have you assisted your child in completing their monthly Book-It Logs?
    • Is your child reading at least 20 minutes each night?
    • Is your child coming to school on time consistently?
    • Is your child completing their daily homework assignments?
    • Have you met with your child's teacher to discuss their academic progress?
    • When was the last time you hugged your child and told them you love them?

    We encourage you to continue asking reflective questions in order to monitor your child's progress and work with our staff to improve student achievement.

    Ager Road is a very busy street, parents are encouraged to remind students to walk on the main roads to school each day. We can ensure our children's safety if the students follow the directions of the crossing guards. For the safety of our students, they will not be allowed to walk through the community parks as a means of a short-cut because adult supervision is not available in those areas. The school will not assume any responsibility or assistance for students and/or parents violating the recommendations.

    Parents are asked to drop the car riders off in the designated area marked in the parking lot for drop off and pick up. Due to limited parking spaces, we are asking the parents to not use the school parking lot between the 7:10 a.m. - 7: 30 a.m. This will allow the staff to secure a parking spot in the effort of getting to their designated duty space in order to receive the students. To maintain ultimate safety, parents are asked to not leave their vehicles running in the parking lot and to not leave younger children unattended in the automobile.

    Students should arrive no earlier than 7:30 a.m. because adult supervision is not available until that time. Students arriving to school should report to the blacktop area located in the rear of the school and stand in their designated grade level line. Students selecting to have breakfast should line up near the door closest to the cafeteria area. Head Start, p through three will enter and exit through the yellow door (north side of the blacktop).

    Student dismissal will begin at 1:55 p.m. unless an emergency requires altering the time. Parents please note, in the event of an emergency normal dismissal procedures may change and may require parents to provide proof of identity. This not meant to cause any complications but to ensure safety for all of the children. During dismissal, parents are asked to remain near the fence as the students are being escorted out. After the first week of school, parents will not be allowed to escort their children to and from the classroom. However, parents are welcome to visit and/or observed at any time. All visitors to the school must sign-in at the main office and wear the visitor's badge. Parents violating this request will be asked to report to the office or leave the building. We enforce all safety measures for our students at Rosa L. Parks!

    Friendly Reminders

    • Students eating breakfast should report to school by 7:30 a.m. Students arriving before 7:45 a.m. will be allowed to eat breakfast.
    • Students reporting to school after 7:45 a.m. will be considered and marked tardy.
    • Students are encouraged to wear the school uniform daily.
    • Request and pick-up for early dismissal must occur before 1:30 p.m. Changes for students' dismissal must be submitted in writing to the classroom teacher. Telephone requests for dismissal changes will not be honored unless it is an emergency. Emergencies will be determined by an administrator.
    • All parent correspondences and student information will be sent home on Thursdays via the red "Home Communication Folder." Exceptions may be made in the event other important information may need to be given to parents.
    • Parents are encouraged to get involved in their child's education by volunteering at school. Persons interested in volunteering must be finger printed or complete a commercial background check. Interested persons are welcome to visit our PTA room (office located outside of the nurse's suite) for more information or to sign up to help.
    • Remember to hug your child each day and let them know you love them!
