    Program Description
Have you ever seen the Earth at night from Space? The sparkling lights punctuating urban areas seem so beautiful from this perspective. However, how about from the perspective of migrating birds who get confused by artificial lights and never reach their destination? How about from the perspective of humans whose natural sleep cycles are disrupted, leaving them at higher risk of developing certain diseases? Come explore these claims, and work as engineers to develop solutions. Become EcoDetectives, working in teams to design and build effective lighting which maximizes light where needed while minimizing the amount of light lost into the sky. Discover how re-engineering lighting systems can also save energy and money! (Planetarium Program)

    Performance Expectation

MS-ETS1-1 Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.

MS-ETS1-2 Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.

MS-ETS1-3 Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.

MS-ESS3-3: Apply scientific principles to design a method for monitoring and minimizing a human impact on the environment.
