    Fire Cadet Program

     Overview:

    The High School Fire Science Cadet Program, developed in collaboration with the Prince George’s County Fire/ EMS Department (PGFD), prepares students for opportunities in Firefighting and Emergency Medical Service (EMS). Students receive appropriate and certified training coordinated through the Fire/ EMS Training Academy and are instructed by certified PGFD fire instructors in a two year program during their 11th and 12th grade years. While enrolled in the Cadet Program, students participate in both classroom and practical experiences. These experiences build knowledge and skills that prepares them to further their education in colleges and universities or enter the career field. 


    Program of Study:

    Year One:

    • Personal Protective Equipment & Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (PPE/SCBA)
    • Fire Fighter I
    • HazMat Ops
    • Firefighter Survival & Rescue
    • Public Fire & Life Safety Education 

    Year Two:

    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
    • Fire Fighter II

     

    Possible State Certifications
    Students may earn the following state certifications upon successful completion of courses and passing score on state certification exam.
    • CPR
    • Fire Fighter I                    
    • Fire Fighter II
    • HazMat Awareness                                                  
    • HazMat Operations
    • Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
    After graduation, students have taken multiple pathways. Academic pathways include majors in fields such as Biology, Pre-Medicine, Nursing and Public Health. Career pathways have led students to direct hire into the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department,  Emergency Room Technicians, private ambulatory services and other public service organizations.
