    Annapolis Road Academy Alternative High School is one of two alternative academy programs whose primary focus is students in grades 9 through 10  who are experiencing behavioral and attendance concerns in the regular classroom setting. Annapolis Road Academy is located in the community of Bladensburg which derived its name from Governor Bladen and the “Battle of Bladensburg.” This historic battle was instrumental in a United States victory during the War of 1812.


    Annapolis Road Academy provides a transitional program that incorporates all of the students’ data and state assessment testing information credited back to their base school. The primary educational mission of this program however, is to afford students an opportunity to earn course credits through individualized instruction. This includes an emphasis on behavior modification and goal development. The program concepts of mandatory school uniforms, the Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) behavior management model, strict attendance guidelines, and small class size are primarily organized for positive student skill development, growth, and academic achievement.  This in turn will create an academy that provides a safe and disciplined learning environment. It is our goal that through these efforts we will develop in students the qualities necessary for their continued success.


    At Annapolis Road Academy Alternative High School, we envision a developmentally responsive school characterized by high expectations for academic excellence and success. Our vision entails a capable staff, highly qualified to implement the School Improvement Plan being sure to meet county, state, and national standards as defined in the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation and Maryland’s accountability system for measuring Adequate Yearly Progress. Instruction is delivered daily based on the “Standards of Excellence” and “The State Curriculum”. This enables students to demonstrate the productive habits of mind for accomplishing learning objectives and experience on-going success throughout their tenure.  In addition, the academy is dedicated to the development of high moral character and a true sense of community.  A priority is placed on the incorporation of “best practice” research based instructional strategies including the direct teaching of higher order thinking skills. The staff and all stakeholders of Annapolis Road Academy will commit to providing a safe, supportive, and disciplined environment in which all students are prepared to become analytical and prepared thinkers while improving their communication and social skills, so that they may become lifelong learners equipped for college and the workforce. We believe that, “All Children Can Learn.”


    The academic program is delivered through the core subjects of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, with selected electives which are offered everyday on a semester schedule with four 70 minute periods. We incorporate computer technology into the instructional process that will support our academic program. Our day begins for students at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 3:05 p.m.
