At Nicholas Orem Middle School, where more than 98 percent of scholars would be first generation college students, Principal Michelle Towles-Monroe and her team know that in addition to closing the achievement gap they must also address an exposure gap.

To support that goal, the entire school (more than 1,000 students) recently spent a day visiting ten area colleges and universities including Georgetown University, Howard University, Bowie State University and more.

During the College Blackout, Orem students had a chance to explore college campuses, gather practical information through interviews with current students and get a head start on understanding financial aid options.
