Scholar of the Week: Suitland HS Senior Destiny Brevard

Suitland High School scholar-athlete and third-year Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) student Destiny Brevard has a plan for the future that honors her family and country while also blazing her own path.

“My dad’s side of the family is all military,” she said. “My grandfather was a big influence on our family and I want to follow the tradition.”

But joining the Army is just one part of her plan.

A multi-sport athlete, throughout high school Destiny has participated in track, basketball, softball, cross country, dance and even flag football. Her involvement in athletics led to several sports injuries, but she says the experiences actually inspired her career choice; she wants to study health sciences or sports medicine in college to become a physical therapist.

Destiny says dedicated staff and mentors at school — especially parent engagement assistant Robert Zackery and Commander Robert Clements — helped her stay focused and underlined the importance of pursuing a college degree in addition to military service to achieve long-term goals.

In addition to JROTC, Destiny is a member of the Suitland High School National Honor Society and participates in recycling, drill team and softball. In the community she volunteers through food drives, serving the homeless and creating care packages for military. And with all of this, she finished her first quarter of senior year with a 3.9 GPA.

Although she has applied to (and been accepted to) many colleges and universities, she describes Howard University as her “dream school.”
