For Pat Bell, working as a school bus driver afforded her the flexibility she needed to be both a working mom and involved parent when her children were young.

Fast forward 30 years and the job has become her way of giving back to the community.

The greatest benefit: student smiles.

“Parents depend on us to get their children to and from school. It’s a job of great responsibility,” Bell said. “How you react to a child who steps on your bus matters. Just a smile or a ‘good morning’ can change the course of their entire day. When parents see that their child is in good hands, it puts them at ease.”

During her three-decade tenure with PGCPS, Pat has driven routes as far as Baltimore and safely transported countless students. Her advice to anyone considering the job: be willing to treat every child as your own.

“I want our community to know we are very committed to our job as drivers,” she said. “We are under pressure as we manage traffic and the outside world. We’re not just drivers. We are traffic advisors, babysitters, mediators, counselors, safety officers and most of all, moms and dads. We are people with a purpose.”

For School Bus Safety Week, we are recognizing the PGCPS transportation team for their role in student safety.
