Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks this month appointed Sandra Shephard, Managing Director at the Prince George's County Latin American Youth Center, to the vacant seat on the Prince George’s County Board of Education.

“Sandra Shephard will be a powerful voice and advocate for every student in our public schools as the newest member of the Board of Education,” Alsobrooks said. “Her background and experience working in the County give her a strong understanding of the challenges we face in our school system.  I look forward to partnering with her and the rest of the Board to ensure every student in every community receives a quality education.”

Born in El Salvador during a civil war and raised by her grandmother, Shephard moved to the United States at the age of 10 to be reunited with her mother.  Living in poverty, she worked as a teenager to meet her own basic needs.  The challenges she faced and overcame in both El Salvador and the U.S. inspired her to be an agent for change.

An alum of Prince George’s Community College, Shephard went on to the University of Maryland Baltimore County, where she received her B.A. in Social Work with a minor in Sociology.  She is currently pursuing a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Maryland and is a student of the Leadership Prince George’s County program. Shephard is the mother of a recent Prince George’s County high school graduate, and her second daughter will start kindergarten this fall.
