    ¡Bienvenidosal año escolar 2018-2019!

    Hello Hillcrest Heights Family,

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year!  We are so excited to partner with you in educating Prince George’s smartest and brightest students at Hillcrest Heights Elementary! It is our goal that 100% of our students will perform at or above grade level in all subjects. Doing so will ensure that our students will be prepared for College and Careers after graduation. However, this task must start while in elementary school. With the continuous support of the parents, perseverance of our students, and dedication of the teachers, we are confident that the students will continue to excel in all of their academics.

The theme of this school year is “Unlocking the potential in every child through Culture, Data, and Performance”.  We are committed to the promise of closing the achievement gap among students through a focus on analyzing data & performance, and in building a culture of learning by engaging our community constituents. We believe our students have the potential to lead the world.  We have to ensure we pour knowledge into our students and support them throughout their time with us. Teamwork makes the dream work!

The faculty and staff are planning diligently to welcome all of our students on the first day of school. We hope you share in our excitement for a successful school year!

Below are a few important notes pertaining to the first days of school:

    • First Day of School: The first day of school is Tuesday, September 4, 2018.
    • School Hours: Student hours are 7:45 a.m.-1:55 p.m. (all students).  Students may enter the building at 7:30 a.m. The instructional day begins at 7:45 a.m. It is imperative that your children are at school and on time.
    • Hillcrest Heights is a mandatory uniform school. All students should be in their school uniform beginning the first day of school.  The uniform consists of WHITE collared shirts, NAVY BLUE khakis/bottoms, and black/brown/or white shoes with white/blue/black socks. Please visit the school’s website for a complete list of the uniform policy at .
    • Our school is a participant of the Maryland Meals for Achievement (MMFA) Classroom Breakfast Program.  Every student at Hillcrest Heights will be given breakfast each day, free of charge. Breakfast will be served in the classrooms.  The program will begin the first day of school, September 4, 2018.  Breakfast begins at 7:30 am and ends at 7:55 a.m. daily. Students also receive free lunch meals.
    • Pre-kindergarten, Kindergarten, and new student orientation will be held on Thursday, August 30, 2018 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.  This orientation will provide the opportunity for new parents and students to Hillcrest Heights to meet the staff and be introduced to the routines, curricular programs and academic practices at our school.  A guided tour will also be offered to ensure that our new students will be acclimated to the building prior to the first day of school. Parents are encouraged to log into SchoolMax to see which class your child is in for the new school year.

    • Back to School Night is scheduled for Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 6:30 p.m.
    • Agenda books will be one of many means of communication for assignments and class activities.  Free agenda books will be provided for students in grades 2-5.  Homework will be written in the book and the teacher will record your child’s daily behavior (upon request).
    • The parent handbook is posted on the school website and will be included in the student agenda book.  Please take the time to view it at your leisure.
    • Communication Folders will be given to each primary student (grades K-2) to use to communicate homework assignments and important papers.
    • Drop-Off Procedures: The first day of school is an exciting time for students and parents alike.  Parents are welcome to walk their child/ren to their classrooms.  However, please be reminded that if you are parking and walking your child to his/her class, you will need to park on the street (22nd place) or in a designated parking space in order to do so.  We will implement the “Kiss and Drive” procedure for students being dropped off by parents in the morning.  This procedure will allow for parents and daycare providers to enter the parking lot, drop off their students next to the sidewalk, and proceed off campus. DRIVERS CANNOT PARK IN THE CIRCLE.  Drivers should remain in their cars so that the flow of traffic will not be interrupted.  Staff members will be on duty to open car doors for students.  The students will use the sidewalk to enter the building.  Please help us in ensuring the safety of our students by following the directives of the monitors.
    • Dismissal Procedures:  Please indicate on the first day of school how your child/ren will go home for the school year.  If he/she is a daycare rider, they will be dismissed from the Multi-purpose room/Cafeteria (near the stage).  If your child is a car rider, they will be dismissed from the Multi-purpose room/Cafeteria, and will be seated by their grade levels.  A parent/guardian signature will be required before any student is released. Pre-K and K students who are parent pick-ups will be picked up at the secondary entryway that is closest to the Pre-K/K classrooms.  All drivers are asked to park in the parking lot before entering the building.  Please do not park in the circle.  Only Daycare vans will be allowed onto the drop-off/pick-up circle in the afternoon.  Dismissal Change: Entrance into the building will not be allowed until all student walkers have been dismissed from the building.

Finally, we look forward to a terrific school year!  Thank you for your continued support.  If there is anything you need, don’t hesitate to ask.  We are a community school that wishes to serve our community.

    Yours in Education,
