• Rain Barrels

The William S. Schmidt Center produces rain barrels available for purchase by county schools and employees.  Rain barrels have a cost of $50.00 each and are available on a first come, first served basis. Rain barrels are purpose built containers that collect rain water from gutter systems for future use in garden watering. This water would otherwise run off unused. Rain barrels provide an excellent opportunity to model water conservation and material repurposing to students while they are able to take measurements and complete calculations along the way.  Each barrel is made from a food grade 50-55 gallon drum and come equipped with a brass hose spigot and overflow hose. Please note that the barrels must tap into existing downspouts at the school and this may require cutting of downspouts. Schools will have to provide two to four cinderblocks per rain barrel so that each can be raised to allow for watering can placement.  Delivery and installation by Mr. Hartling is possible under certain conditions, however the barrels are available for pick up as long as available.  For any further information, or to inquire about purchase and installation, please feel free to contact Mr. Steven Hartling at the Schmidt Center through G-mail or at 301-888-1185.
