A Message from Your Principal, Tom Smith
tom.smith@pgcps.org

On behalf of our dedicated staff members, I wish to welcome you to Vansville Elementary. We are very excited that you will be a member of our school and learning community.   Throughout this year, we encourage you to visit Vansville Elementary, attend school programs and become an active participant in the school.  Involvement, communication and cooperation between the home and school provide the kinds of working relationships that are important for a child’s successful experience in school.

My 20+ years as a teacher, math specialist and principal in Prince George’s County Public Schools have provided me with the opportunity to work with children, parents/guardians and staff of diverse backgrounds.  It is my belief that our education system has a tremendous opportunity to work in partnership with the home and the community.  There must be a fundamental commitment to multi-cultural diversity within all educational settings.  It is imperative that we have a dynamic force for educational opportunity and equity for all stakeholders.  As a rule, the parents/guardians know their children better than anyone and need to be included in the process of education.  One of my core benefits of teaching is assisting parents in their role of raising their children by supplying the formal education component, and a portion of the social education component, in a safe, peaceful environment.  Parents/guardians must feel that they are a major component of the school and participate in the decision making process for student success.  Not only is accessibility to a first-rate education key to the metropolitan setting, but there must be an outreach component.  Public education has both the responsibility to the individual student and to the greater community.  In addition to the sharing of knowledge to our children, we must incorporate addressing the needs and inequalities in our society.

We are very proud to be the first “certified” green school in Prince George’s County.  This will provide all of us with exciting projects that will help our children become aware of our responsibilities to save our environment.  As we welcome you to your new school, we are very excited that you represent some of the top schools in our county.  Change is always challenging and we will make this transition as smooth as possible for all.  We are confident that the tradition of excellence that you have become accustomed to, will continue.  In order to continue this impressive standard, it is essential that students are present in school on a daily basis and prepared.  Preparation includes having the proper supplies, assignments, clothing, rest, nourishment and committed attitude.   We look forward to working with you and encourage you to become an active member of our PTA.  We also invite you to volunteer at the school.  Remember, your child’s education is a partnership between the home, school and community.  Let your child know that you support the school, teachers and education.  Instill in your child a love for learning and respect for policies and procedures of the school.  Become familiar with the expectations for your child’s particular grade level and frequently communicate with your child’s teacher.

I am excited about the opportunity to work with you and your child.  The partnership that will develop is valued and appreciated.
