Message from Ms. Davis

Keeping our students safe at school is a top priority!  Parents and/or Guardians: Please make certain that your volunteer information is updated with the main office. Anyone volunteering in any capacity such as in our classrooms or on field trips must have the following completed:  Fingerprinting, Background Checks, and 3 printed Certificates for completed Safety Training Videos. Parents who volunteer for one day events and who visit University Park on any given day, such as the Dr. Seuss Breakfast, Career Day, Field Day, etc.. do not have to complete the commercial background check, but they must present a photo ID at the front office and have it scanned in our Raptor Management System.  This is a systemic requirement in order to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

Thank you to James Booker, Jodi Cohen, Krista Atteberry and Ted Darlington for sponsoring our Destination Imagination (DI) teams this year.  Sponsoring a DI team requires a huge commitment and we are so appreciative. Our students are fortunate to have such dedicated parents and volunteers.  Lastly, thank you to Nancy Ross for chairing the Silent Auction Committee. Last week’s Silent Auction was so much fun and it raised a great deal of money for a worthy cause, our students, and staff.  If you missed the auction this year, there’s always next year. After School Enrichment Classes:

There are a few spots left!
After-School Enrichment classes started this week! We have two spots in our Ceramics class (from 2:10 to 3:10 on Mondays, $110) and a few spots left in Karate (2:10 to 3:10 on Thursdays, $100). Email upesafterschool@gmail.com to sign up! First come, first served.
Break the Ice—Go Ice Skating with UPES!
Wells Ice Skating Rink
Sunday, March 18 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Have a blast ice skating with all your UPES friends! Come to Wells Ice Skating Rink (5211 Paint Branch Parkway in College Park) from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 18! For only $6, you get entrance and a skate rental. A percentage of every ticket sold in advance will go back to the PTA, so email upesafterschool@gmail.com to find out how to purchase online. You don't have to be a UPES student to attend this awesome event...friends, family and neighbors are all welcome!

Awards Assembly

The third quarter Awards Assembly will be held Wednesday, April 18, 2018. Grades  4-6, 8:15 a.m.-9:00 a.m. Grades 2-3, 9:00 a.m.-9:45 a.m. in the gym.


Azalea Classic

Join the UPES community for fun and fitness at the 17th Annual UPES Azalea Classic on Saturday, April 21st! The Azalea Classic includes three races: 1K, 1 Mile and 5K. Our students have been hard at work training for the race in their Physical Education class. Let your student have their chance to show off their training by joining their peers at the race! All proceeds from the event benefit the students at UPES. In addition to the race itself, there are a lot of things going on. There is a great DJ, dancing, giveaways and a trophy presentation. All of this takes place on the basketball court behind the school. Find out more or register at www.azaleaclassic.com. Events start at 8:30 a.m. at UPES, but we encourage everyone to arrive early (8AM). Save time on Saturday morning by picking up your t-shirt and race number on Friday from 2-7pm in the gym. Then all you have to do on Saturday morning is meet in the bus circle in front of the school. Questions? Peter Pan Jr. Musical

University Park's 49th musical production will take place earlier than usual this year! The show dates are as follows:

March 23 @ 7:00 pm in the University Park gymnasium

March 24 @ 4:00 pm in the University Park gymnasium

March 24 @ 7:00 pm in the University Park gymnasium


Tickets and t-shirts will be available to the public from March 5 - March 22 on a first come, first served basis.


Tickets purchased between March 5th and 22nd will be $7.00 per person. Tickets purchased at the door on March 23rd or 24th will have an increased rate of $10.00 per person.

Start talking to your friends and family today so that you're ready to reserve your seats and t-shirts as soon as possible! All proceeds benefit the University Park music department.

Off to Neverland we go!

Safety Drills

Teachers have spent the last few weeks reviewing expectations for Safety Drills with students.  Students are expected to:

  • Quickly move to the nearest classroom, office, bathroom, etc... when a Lockdown is announced

  • Move to the designated location at the front of the school if they arrive to school and the front door is locked (ask your child/ren)

  • Move to the designated location out back if they arrive to school and the backdoor is locked (ask your child/children)

  • Never open doors for adults

  • Remain silent in their safe spaces  until the “all clear” is announced or authorities arrive


Specialty Program Lottery Deadlines

Specialty Programs Lottery applications are due Monday, March 12 by 5 p.m. For more information, contact the Department of Pupil Accounting & School Boundaries at 301-952-6300.

Student Based Budget

Please join us tonight for the Student Based Budget Community Meeting from 6:00 -7:00 p.m. to discuss priorities as related to the budget.  There will be no decisions made at the meeting.


Parent Engagement Corner

-We are still printing over 300 paper newsletters twice a month!  As an Official Green School, we would like to reduce the amount of paper utilized for newsletters, so please let us know if we can add you to our email list and remove you from our paper list ASAP.  You can email Ms. Sanders at: alyse.sanders@pgcps.org and let her know!


-Parents:  in order to avoid classroom and instructional interruptions please remember to bring your students’ items with them to school in the morning, ie:  Lunches, Backpacks, Notebooks, Water Bottles, Instruments, etc.


-Shining Star in Hyattsville is now providing all day childcare for 2,3, and 4 year olds Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.  No transportation provided. Call 240-705-4250 for information.


-Wednesday, March 14 at 8:00 a.m:  Learn about Immigrants’ Rights from a representative from CAIR Coalition.  WE KEEP FAMILIES TOGETHER

Yearbooks

The Yearbook Committee needs your help!  Please send any pictures that you have of school events such as Fall Fest, Halloween Parade, Family Gym Night, Family Game Night, etc if you’d like them in our school yearbook.  All pictures and/or questions should be emailed to to Ms. Rhonda Coon at Rhonda.Coon@pgcps.org.  Also, please submit all Yearbook Forms (attached) to Ms. Alyse Sanders, Parent Engagement Assistant.
