EAGLE NEWS!!!

February 21, 2018

Message from Ms. Davis

Great things are happening at UPES!  Ms. Labovitz and the Social Studies Committee have hosted a number of exciting  activities and events in honor of Black History Month. Yesterday and today, each class had the opportunity to experience a Moveable Museum of  Black History Artifacts.   Last night, families enjoyed our Black History Program which featured musical selections from our UP Choir, a performance of “Harriet Tubman, The Chosen One” by Gwendolyn Strand, and a student created wax museum.  We also had number of teachers and grade levels compete in a Door Decorating Contest.  Congratulations to Ms. Jones, Ms. Barcarse, Ms. Nell, and Ms. Coon who were the overall winners for the Door Decorating Contest.   Lastly, thank you to all of the parents who contributed in large and small ways to make the Valentine’s Day parties a success.  The next Eagle Newsletter will come home with students March 7, 2018.  If you need anything between now and then don’t hesitate to contact me via email Toi.Davis@pgcps.org or 301-985-1898.

We are excited to announce that the county art show will be in 2 separate venues this year. The North County Exhibit, in which University Park's artwork will be displayed, will be at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center in the Grand Pavilion. Join in the fun the morning of March 2nd by volunteering to cook or serve breakfast.

Off to Neverland we go!

Safety Drills

We will conduct monthly fire drills and quarterly lockdown drills to prepare for emergencies. Our last Lockdown Drill February 12, 2018, highlighted the fact that we need to practice the drills more than quarterly with students.  Therefore, teachers and students  will review the expectations and we will practice at varying times of the day to ensure student and staff know what to do in the event of a Lockdown.

About ASE: This semester, our students will have lots of opportunities to explore a fun range of activities—from dance and coding, to Ultimate Frisbee, art and even cooking! Classes meet once a week directly after school (with the exception of some B&A classes) and run for eight weeks. Not only are these classes a ton of fun for the kids, they’re also an important fundraiser for our PTA.

Student Based Budgeting (SBB)

Student Based Budgeting (SBB) distributes funding to schools based on students’ needs and characteristics. With SBB, schools and communities have a clearer understanding of how and why dollars are being allocated.  SBB differs from a  traditional funding system that allocates resources to schools based on staffing formulas and school-specific programs.  Schools are funded per child, and the amount of funding attached to each child will vary based on his or her needs.  Furthermore, schools also have more flexibility in deciding what to do with those resources.

The Student Based Budget is scheduled to be released to schools March 2, 2018.  Therefore, we will hold our Community Meeting March 7, 2018, 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the Media Center to discuss priorities as related to the budget.  There will be no decisions made at the meeting.  If the budget isn’t released March 2nd, we will move  forward with the scheduled meeting due to the quick turnaround time to complete and submit the budget per the PGCPS timeline.  Please click  Student Based Budget (SBB) Priorities SY 2018-2019 to provide input regarding budget priorities for SY 2018-2019.  Those families who receive hardcopies of the newsletter should return the attached paper survey to the front office by March 2, 2018, as the electronic link will be available to all community members until that time.
