University Park Elementary School

November 15, 2017

Message from Ms. Davis

Thank you to all of the families who attended parent teacher conferences last week.  If you were unable to schedule a conference last week, please know that it isn’t too late to meet with your child’s teacher.  A huge thank you to Ms. Sanders for  organizing the interpreters from PGCPS and University of Maryland.    I’d also like to thank Neyreda Dunn and the PTA for a wonderful Book Fair.  The students enjoyed browsing and selecting the perfect book to read.

Parents, in keeping with our “Green School” Status, we are trying to minimize the amount of paper used for our bimonthly newsletters.  We are still printing over 300 newsletters that are 8 pages or more, that makes for about 4,800 sheets of paper per month, 43,200 sheets per year!!

Please sign up  using the link to receive your newsletter electronically, thus saving some trees and helping our environment!

Also, if you would like to receive text updates from University Park, download WhatsApp for free.  You’ll receive info regarding events, school closings, early dismissals, community activities, etc. in Spanish and English.  If you have any questions or suggestions, email Alyse Sanders, your parent engagement assistant at:

The next newsletter will be published December 6, 2017.  If you need me between now and then, please contact me at 301-985-1898 or

Family Movie Night

All families are invited to attend our Family Movie Night. The event is free and all are welcome to attend. Consider bringing your dinner to eat here while watching the movie. Students may wear their pj's, bring a pillow, etc. to watch the movie in comfort. There will not be a snack table so just bring what your family wants and needs for the evening. We will use this time to model appropriate behavior for a different environment - so students will be expected to sit and watch the movie with their friends. Parents and adults will help to model this behavior so that the students learn to modify their behavior to match the situation - a higher order thinking skill!

Looking forward to seeing you Thursday, Nov. 16 at 6:00-7:15pm.

First Quarter Honor Roll Assemblies

The Honor Roll Assemblies will be held in the cafeteria for students in grades 2-6 on December 5, 2017.  The assembly will begin at 8:15 a.m. for students in grades 2-3.  The assembly for grades 4-6 will begin at 9:00 a.m. Students have the opportunity to earn the Principal’s Honor Roll, Honor Roll, Eagle Effort, and Attendance Awards.  Attendance Awards will be given to students in their homerooms.

Students in grades 2-6 who qualify for each level of honor roll will be identified by the Department of Student Applications based on grades entered on student report cards in elementary schools.

The following criteria will be used to identify students at each level:

a. Principal’s Honor Roll: Students with at least a 4.0 GPA with no grade on the report card below an “A”.

b. Honor Roll: Students with at least a 3.0 GPA or higher with no grade lower than a “C”.
