EAGLE NEWS!!!

September 20, 2017

Message from Ms. Davis

Thank you to everyone who attended last week’s Back to School Night.  It is my hope that you learned a great deal about our school and your child’s instructional program.  The evening appeared to run smoothly and I saw many smiling faces as families exited the building.  We are always trying to streamline our processes to make parent evenings effective and efficient.  As a result, we made a few changes this year that I hope were noticeable for parents.  We are also in early talks as a school to streamline Back to School Night even further by turning Open House into a Back to School Event.  No decisions have been made at this time but stay tuned for additional information.  The next Eagle Newsletter  will come home with students Wednesday, October 4th.  If you have any questions between now and then, please contact me at Toi.Davis@pgcps.org or 301-985-1898.

Halloween Festivities

  • Our Halloween parade and Sing-a-long will take place  Tuesday, October 31, 2017, 12:00 p.m.

  • The Sing-a-long for grades Pre-K, 2, 4, and 6 will start at 12:30 in the gym, and at 1:00 p.m. for grades K, 1, 3, and 5. When the students are not at the Sing-a-long, they will enjoy  a Halloween party in their classrooms. For the Halloween celebration, please encourage students to  bring his/her costume in a bag for the afternoon – we will have a regular academic morning. For the afternoon, the students' costumes should be appropriate and not too scary or violent. Props that are weapons are not allowed.

  • We are in need of costumes for students, any donations would be greatly appreciated. Please send all donated costumes to the front office.

  • It is also important that families follow PGCPS Administrative Procedure 01160 when providing refreshments for the Halloween  celebration.  “In order to protect the health of all students and avoid the risk of food borne illness, allergic reaction or food intolerance, only foods that are pre-packaged with a label; from a licensed commercial vendor and sources; whole fresh fruits and vegetables; and, or prepared by Nutrition Services will be allowed to be served to students.”

Health Room

We do not have a regular nurse at the present time.  Health Services is looking for a replacement and we are  hopeful that a candidate will be found soon.  In the interim  Pat Papa, Nursing Manager has come to our school intermittently and we have been working with nurses from  surrounding schools to ensure our students are receiving the proper care.  We are asking parent to please be patient as we work through this transition.

New Tardy Policy at UPES:

University Park Elementary School hours are:  7:40 a.m.-1:55 p.m.

Students are expected in their classrooms by 8:00 a.m. The side and back doors are locked after 8:00 a.m.  Parents must then enter through the front doors of the school to receive a tardy pass from the front office after 8:00 a.m.

Please ensure your child arrives to school on time every day to prevent a loss of instructional time. If a student is late, a parent MUST enter the school with the child and sign the child in  via the Tardy Binder. The student will then be given a laminated pass which will be given to the teacher to grant the child entry into the classroom.

Please  ensure your child  has  everything he/she needs BEFORE they arrive  to school.

This includes: Backpacks, Lunch, Water Bottles, Instruments, School Projects, etc.

We are trying to minimize the number of interruptions during instruction.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
