Message from Ms. Davis

The next few weeks will be extremely busy here at UPES.  Please pay close attention to the “Upcoming Events” section so you are aware of all of our events scheduled until the end of the year. .    We’d like to thank all of the families who came out last week  to participate in our Chipotle Dine Out Night.  We raised $789.00 which is awesome!   Sadly, there are only 16  days of school, 14 of which are full days, but who’s counting?    The final Eagle Newsletter will come home with students June 7, 2017.  If you need anything between now and then don’t hesitate to contact me via email or 301-985-1898.

3rd Annual 6th Grade Clap Out

Please join us as we celebrate the promotion of our sixth grade students on Friday, June 9, 2017, 11:40 a.m.  The entire school will line our hallways and applaud our sixth graders as they parade through the building in celebration of their accomplishment.  This will be a lovely event and we encourage all members of the UPES Family to attend the Clap Out.

Field Day 2017
May 22nd – 6th Grade
May 31st –  K-3 Grades

June 2nd – 4th-5th Grades

Field Day events are set up around the field and in the gym for student enjoyment. Some of the stations include water games to add to the fun and also help to cool off the kids.

All students should be dressed for outdoor games and wear the color designated by their homeroom teacher. In addition to proper play clothing, EVERY student must have a water bottle WITH their name on it. Applying sunscreen at home helps to move the day along faster. A hat is also a good idea.

Parent volunteers are needed to "run" the stations. (All supplies are set up and ready to go and an orientation will be provided at 8am to ensure that you know what to do.) Volunteers are needed from 8:00-11:30am or any part thereof. If you are able to help, please let your child's homeroom teacher know of your availability.

Honor Roll Assemblies

The fourth quarter awards assembly will be held June 6, 2017. Grades 2-3, 8:15 a.m.-9:00 a.m. Grades 4-5, 9:00 a.m.-9:55 a.m.  It is very important that the first assembly begins on time so that the second assembly and lunches aren’t impacted.

Parent Workshop

Ms. Jackson and Ms. Sandoval will host several parent workshops for parents whose students are having academic challenges in reading and/or math.  Parents will be invited to attend the workshops.  Parents may select which date below works for their schedule as the content  will be the same regardless of the selected date.

  • May 30, 2017, 2:30-3:30 p.m.

  • June 1, 2017, 5:00 -6:00 p.m.

  • June 8, 2017, 12:30-1:30 p.m.

We love that our community is filled with animal lovers but pets are not allowed on school grounds during arrival, dismissal, or during outdoor recess.  This is a safety issue for students, staff, and the larger community.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Summer Programs

The Summer School Programs Office has posted the 2017 Summer Programs Guide. Updates to guides, flyers, registration forms, and area summer opportunities can be found at http;//  If you have questions regarding the Summer Programs Guide, please contact the Summer Programs Office at 301.808.1124 or the Summer Programs Manager as listed in the guide.

UPES students completed PARCC testing last Friday.  Students in grades 3 through 6 were tested in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math over several days.  During testing, UPES students stayed on task and worked hard. Students exemplified our school motto "Unity, Pride, Excellence, and Success."   I would like to thank the PTA for providing snacks for PARCC testing as the students enjoyed them immensely.    Thank you for making sure students were well rested, ate a healthy breakfast, and arrived to school on time.   PARCC results will be available in the Fall.
