Message from Ms. Davis

The Azalea Classic is this Saturday, April 8, 2017.  Ms. Neff is looking forward to seeing the students and community as she has missed everyone dearly.  A huge thank you to Sarah Nelkin for chairing the Azalea Classic Committee! Ms. Nelkin has worked tirelessly with Ms.Neff and Ms. Sanders to ensure Saturday’s event is spectacular.  We’d also like to thank Ms. Sanders for pinch hitting for Ms. Neff by collecting registrations, creating the bulletin boards, and encouraging staff and student participation.  The Azalea Classic race day schedule is below.

  • Saturday morning, APRIL 8th  – If you have NOT picked up your shirt and race number, please Go to the gym, then to the balloon arch.

  • The 1 Mile race starts at 8:30 – don’t be late! Begins at the balloons!

  • The 1 K race starts at 8:45. – Begins at the balloons!

  • The 5 K race begins at 9:05 – down at the bottom of Queens Chapel Road near E/W Hwy.

Azalea Classic Spirit Week, April 3-8

  • Monday, April 3 – School Spirit Wear – Wear your school shirt or blue shirt

  • Tuesday, April 4 – Dress Like a Runner Day – headband and all!

  • Wednesday, April 5 – “What Shoe Doin’ On Saturday?” – shoe collection for Zambia

  • Thursday, April 6- Team Jersey day – wear a shirt or jersey of your favorite team

  • Friday, April 7 - Azalea Classic Day –Wear a previous Azalea Classic shirt, or a shirt the color of an Azalea, red, pink or white.

  • Monday, April 10 – Wear your NEW Azalea Classic shirt and medals from  other years

Honor Roll Assemblies

The third quarter awards assembly will be held April 13, 2017. Grades 2-3, 8:15 a.m.-9:00 a.m. Grades 4-6, 9:00 a.m.-9:45 a.m.  It is very important that the first assembly begins on time so that the second assembly and lunches aren’t impacted.


2017-2018 Calendar

PGCPS understands school delays or closures greatly impact students, families, and staff. When making decisions to close or delay schools, the district’s key focus is on the safety of students and staff.  View the PGCPS 2017-18 school calendar online at: www1.pgcps.org/calendar/.


Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Registration

Registration for Pre-K and Kindergarten for SY 2017-18 will begin on Monday, April 10, 2017, at 8:30 am. For Pre-K, your child must be 4 by September 1, 2017, and for Kindergarten, your child must be 5 by September 1, 2017.  You will need to bring with you your child's birth certificate, immunization records, and proof of residency (current mortgage statement, property tax statement, lease, etc.)  If you are registering your child for Pre-K, you will also need to bring with you 2 current consecutive pay stubs.


Spring Music Concert

Join us as the UPES Music Department performs its Spring Concert! The concert will be held at Northwestern High School Monday, May 15, 2017 at 6:00 pm.  Students in the band, orchestra, and choir will  showcase the culmination of their hard work this year.  All are welcome to attend!


Spring Break Packets

PGCPS is offering optional Spring Break Packets for students in K-12. The packets will be available online April 7-23.  The packets can be accessed by via a tab on the main PGCPS webpage labeled Spring Break Packets. The answer keys will be posted online after April 23, 2017.


STEM Fair Winners

Congratulations to the following students who will be representing University Park Elementary in this years PGCPS County STEM Fair which will be held May 17, 2017 at Charles Flowers High School.

Kaia Booker, Corey Schmick, Julia Garcia, Sophia Becraft, Alena Beckmann, Nathan Widman

Also, congratulations to Julia Beckmann for winning several awards at this years PGCPS Junior County STEM Fair. We are so proud of you!  Those awards include:

  • Discovery Education: Top STEM Award

  • STEM Specialty Award

  • Best Presentation Award

  • First place in the category of Systems Software

  • Broadcom Masters Award

  • Outstanding Engineer Award.


Summer Programs

The Summer School Programs Office has posted the 2017 Summer Programs Guide. Updates to guides, flyers, registration forms, and area summer opportunities can be found at http;//www1.pgcps.org/summerschool/.  If you have questions regarding the Summer Programs Guide, please contact the Summer Programs Office at 301.808.1124 or the Summer Programs Manager as listed in the guide.


Transitional Students

Students transitioning to a new school as a result of a promotion to a different educational level, boundary change, participation in a specialty school or change in residence must provide proof of residency. Proof of residency may be established by any of the following documents: settlement papers, lease/rental agreement, deed of property, mortgage statement, letter from apartment complexes on official letterhead, or a current property tax bill.  Settlement papers, lease agreement, and rental agreements must be signed and dated by all parties.   Parents of students in grade 6 must come to UPES to update proof of residency by Wednesday, May 10, 2017 .  


Parents of Pre-K students who are out of boundary, your child will be automatically enrolled in their boundary school for next year.  You will need to complete a new registration at the boundary school along with providing updated proof of residency.  




Write A Book

This year, 31 Write-A-Book projects were completed and 16 books were submitted to the county for judging. Of those 16, seven were winners!  The county wide winners are below and will be recognized at the county wide awards program on May 9, 7-9PM at Roosevelt High School. ALL students who submitted a completed Write A Book will be invited to an Author's Tea, held at University Park in May to celebrate their hard work and achievement.

PTA Corner

The end of the year is closing in on us.  Do not miss everybody’s favorite University Park activity this Saturday…the Azalea Classic.  An event for everyone!  The PTA is starting to think about next year.  This year has been a year full of many success thanks to so many PTA members taking part in different jobs both big and small.  As we think about next year consider stepping up for a piece of the fun.  There are so many options from one day events (Fall Fest) to longer term planning (restaurant nights).  Let us know if you think you might be able to help in anyway.  PTA lots of hands for sure makes light work!
