Message from Ms. Davis

Happy New Year!  I hope that everyone enjoyed their winter break and has settled back into the routine.  Thank you so much to the Helping Hands Committee for their efforts to support our families in need.  The circle of support provided to families by our community is extraordiary amd unmatched by other communities.  Thank you to all of the parents who have agreed to work as a STEM Fair judge this year.  We really appreciate your support as organizing the fair takes a great deal of effort.  Lastly, students will receive their second quarter report card on February 2, 2017.   We would like for parents to review assessment and report card data and assist in setting goals with their children.  The next Eagle newsletter will come home February 1, 2017.  If you need anything between now and then don’t hesitate to contact me via email Toi.Davis@pgcps.org or 301-985-1898.    


BoxTops

Please show your support for UPES by cutting out, and bringing in BoxTops for Education! Each BoxTop that we collect is worth $0.10 for our school.  This money can be used to purchase new technology, books, equipment, and resources that will make our school even better!  And the best part is, you don’t need to spend any more money than you already do!  BoxTops are found on paper products, all kinds of food, clothing, and school and office supplies that you buy anyway. So please, next time you see a BoxTop on an old cereal box don’t throw it away-- send it to school!


Hyattsville MS Creative & Performing Arts Program

OPEN APPLICATION for Hyattsville MS Creative & Performing Arts Program! The Creative & Performing Arts application is now open for rising 7th grade students who are interested in auditioning for the CPA program at Hyattsville MS.  Please read the following information to find, complete and submit your application before MARCH 12, 2017.

Note: Before you begin, check SCHOOL FINDER http://gis.pgcps.org/schoolfinder/findschool2.asp to locate YOUR CPA School  

  1. Visit https://sites.google.com/a/pgcps.org/cvpa-vpa-application-process/hyattsville-middle-cpa to read and select one of the disciplines that your child would like to audition for. Categories include: Dance, Music (Instrumental & Vocal), Theater, Visual Arts, TV/Media Production

  2. Gather all required information to complete your application:

  • Student ID # (found on progress reports & report cards)

  • Resume (listing academic & artistic accomplishments)

  • Two SEALED recommendation forms (follow instructions online for recommendation form requirements)

  • Current school year report card (must denote a minimum of 2.0+ GPA for each quarter)

  • Copy of transcript

  1. Download, save and print your application OR complete your application online. If you are mailing your application, be sure to include all required forms. The application must be received in the HMS CPA office before March 12, 2017. LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!

  2. If COMPLETED APPLICATION and ALL required documents are received by March 12, 2017, your child will receive an audition date and time approximately (4) weeks after the application window closes.

  3. FOR STUDENTS- On the day of your Audition:

  • Be prepared to write a short essay explaining why you want to attend the Creative & Performing Arts Program at Hyattsville MS

  • You will write a personal paragraph (no more than 150 words) answering the following questions:

  1. Why would you like to be a student in the CPA program?

  2. How would your school experience at a CPA school be different than another school?

  3. Describe what your academic and artistic contributions to the CPA program will be. *You will have 15 minutes to complete this task.

Special Programs Open House

Please join us for our Specialty Programs Open House on February 9, 2017 from 6:00 to 7:30 at University Park Elementary School. Come and find out about our rigorous yet exciting ESOL, Special Education, and Talented and Gifted programs that we offer. You will have the opportunity to interact with our staff for a question and answer session after each presentation.  The structure of the evening is below.

PTA Corner

Winter is a season for planning.  The PTA is working hard to plan for some of our big events.


February 8th is our school Science Fair.  We are still in need of judges, as well as a few people to help support the hospitality efforts for the judges.  Please contact Ms. Alexia Roy, STEM Fair Coordinator at Alexia.Roy@pgcps.org if you can assist.


March 4th 5-8 pm is the UPES Silent Auction at Wallace Presbyterian Church. Free Music! Free Drinks! This event is a large part of our PTA income and so we need lots of helpers.  Also mark the date and get a babysitter, as we need good attendance to make the event a success.  A sign up genius was sent to the PTA listserve.  If you did not receive it and wish to help, please email Nancy Ross at upesptasecretary@gmail.com
