EAGLE NEWS!!!

November 16, 2016

Message from Ms. Davis

Thank you to all of the families who attended parent teacher conferences last week.  If you were unable to schedule a conference last week, please know that it isn’t too late to meet with your child’s teacher.  A huge thank you to Ms. Sanders for  organizing the Computer Workshop for parents.  We hope to see more parents at our next parent workshop scheduled for December 13, 2016.    I’d also like to thank the PTA for forming the Helping Hands Committee to provide support for  our neediest families. We have the best community and our students and families are very fortunate to be surrounded by so many people who care.    The next newsletter will be published December 7, 2016.  If you need me between now and then, please contact me at 301-985-1898 or Toi.Davis@pgcps.org.

Children of the United States (COTUS)

Several students have shared their thoughts  regarding the election verbally and in writing with school staff  and some parents are looking for ways to assist their children with processing their feelings.  As a result, there has been Twitter and Instagram pages created to do just that called COTUS (Children of the United States) .

A place where the COTUS - all children, not just the children of democrats - can share letters that they've written to our President Elect and other government officials or candidates. Letters expressing their thoughts/fears/hopes/expectations...

The idea is healing.  The idea is to teach them a constructive way of managing their feelings.  The idea is to teach them to use their voices and to let them know that their voices matter and should be heard.

If your child or a child you know is interested in sending a letter in, please consider checking out their social media pages. Positive comments only.

First Quarter Honor Roll Assemblies

The Honor Roll Assemblies will be held in the cafeteria for students in grades 2-6 on November 21, 2016.  The assembly will begin at 8:15 a.m. for students in grades 2-3.  The assembly for grades 4-6 will begin at 9:00 a.m. Students have the opportunity to earn the Principal’s Honor Roll, Honor Roll, Eagle Effort, and Attendance Awards.  Attendance Awards will be given to students in their homerooms.

Students in grades 2-6 who qualify for each level of honor roll will be identified by the Department of Student Applications based on grades entered on student report cards in elementary schools.

The following criteria will be used to identify students at each level:

a. Principal’s Honor Roll: Students with at least a 4.0 GPA with no grade on the report card below an “A”.

Write-A-Book

Write-A-Book is optional for all students, but despite that over 20 students have signed up! The first round of drafts are rolling in. There are entries in every category: non-fiction, illustrated fiction, short story, and picture books. The Write-A-Book committee is excited to read them over and provide feedback soon. We will return drafts submitted by November 10 to students before Thanksgiving break to allow students time to consider suggestions, make edits, and refine their stories.

PTA Corner

Your  PTA has a new committee...Helping Hands.  We will work on several projects during the school year to help UPES families in need.  Please let us know if you are interested in joining this committee...it is new and we are still figuring things out-we would love help. Contact Kara Frome using the email karasell14@gmail.com  or via phone 240-476-0778.

We are starting out with a clothing drive. We have compiled a list from a few UPES families in need.  Please consider donating WINTER clothing in good condition.  There is a laundry basket outside the school office for donations.  If you are interested in making a monetary or gift card donation that would be great too--any way that we can help these families is MUCH appreciated.  The money and/or give cards can go in an envelope that is available in the school office.
