EAGLE NEWS!!!

May 18, 2016

Message from Ms. Davis

Congratulations to Lauren Martin and Meredith Young for being selected as amazing educators across the United States by the US Department of Education!  They were  nominated  for being  people who are  influencing lives in their  classrooms and beyond.   Please read the responses from their individual anonymous nominations. “Lauren Martin is a shining star early childhood educator. In a diverse school with a student body that is 50% free/reduced lunch and approximately 1/3 Black, 1/3 White, and 1/3 Latino, she creates a welcoming, playful, rigorous learning environment for all students. She leads an after school dance program and many community activities. Overall, she is a wonderful veteran teacher with an extraordinary reputation in the community for making all students feel valued and helping all children learn.”

“ Ms. Young begins each year by telling the parents of her new second graders that her goal for the year is for each student to develop a lifelong love of reading.  She nurtures that goal in several ways such as talking about the books she is currently reading, helping students find genres they love, and even ordering books for them on Amazon if she doesn't already have a book they might like. My son's vocabulary and interest in school has grown exponentially this year, and he already liked school!   Ms. Young has a gift for making little things interesting.  She truly loves teaching students and that love shines through in everything she does.”  We’re happy to see that the US Department of Education has  recognized what we’ve known at UPES  for years.  Way to go Ms. Martin and Ms. Young!

Thank you to the PTA and Eric Maring for organizing last week’s assembly by  Lesole Dance Company.  The students and teachers enjoyed the interactive and lively performances.  I missed it but I hear Ms. Young and Krista Atteberry can really cut a rug.  Thank you so much as the performances were a great way to end our hectic month of  PARCC testing.  We’d also like to thank all of the families who came out Monday night to participate in our school sponsored Dine Out Night at Chipotle.  It was great to see so many families participate in this wonderful event!  Sadly, there are less than 30 days of school left but UPES remains an exciting and engaging place for students.  Please pay close attention to the “Upcoming Events” section so you are aware of all of our events scheduled until the end of the year.  The next Eagle Newsletter will come home with students June 1, 2016.  If you need anything between now and then don’t hesitate to contact me via email Toi.Davis@pgcps.org or 301-985-1898.

MSDE Visit

All UPES community members are invited to help us celebrate as we receive our Excellence in Gifted And Talented Education (EGATE) banner.  Representatives from the Maryland State Department of Education will visit UPES Tuesday, May 24, 2016, 8:00 a.m. to present the banner and complete a brief school tour.  The PTA has offered to provide light refreshments for all visitors.  All are welcome!

Student Based Budget (SBB) Update

Thank you for your interest in the SBB Process.  I’m currently awaiting approval  of the budget draft from the Board of Education. Once it is approved, we will hold a community meeting to review the approved budget. I would also like to thank those of you who were able to provide input via the survey and the SBB Community Input Meeting.  While I cannot share details about the budget until it is approved, please be assured that the community priorities of teacher retention and small class size were used to inform budgeting decisions for SY16.  Thank you for your continued patience and support.

Testing

UPES students completed PARCC testing last Thursday.  Students in grades 3 through 6 were tested in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math over several days.  During testing, UPES students stayed on task and worked hard. Students exemplified our school motto "Unity, Pride, Excellence, and Success".   I would like to thank the PTA for providing snacks for PARCC testing as the students enjoyed them immensely.   Parents, your support is invaluable during testing.  Thank you for making sure students were well rested, ate a healthy breakfast, and arrived to school on time.   PARCC results will be available in the Fall.
