Message from Ms. Davis

This has been a wonderful school year for UPES students, staff, and parents!  We began 2016 as one of six schools in the state of Maryland to earn the Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) Award.  Then, April 21st we were notified  that we are now a certified Maryland Green School. Thank you to Ms. Neff who spearheaded our Green School application and thank you to all of the wonderful teachers and students who provided the artifacts demonstrating all that we do.   We will receive our award next week.  We’d also like to thank Susan Berkun, Amanda Helin, and Valerie Mosely for their assistance with the Real School Gardens application.  We won’t know until mid to late May as to whether we have been accepted into the program.  Our fingers are crossed that our application and interview were more than enough to warrant acceptance into the program.  Stay tuned!   Lastly, I’d like to apologize to Leo Maring as his name was inadvertently omitted from the list of Cricket players in our last newsletter.  My apologies to Leo and his family as he is a valuable player for our team and the omission was unintentional. The next Eagle Newsletter will come home with students May 18, 2016.  If you need anything between now and then don’t hesitate to contact me via email or 301-985-1898.

It is with great sadness that I announce the departure of three of our beloved staff members.  Each person has elected to write a small note to the community they love.

Kathy Baer

After 30 years of teaching, all here at University Park, I've decided to retire at the end of this school year.  I will always treasure my memories of our wonderful staff, students, and school community.

Amanda Waugh

I am sorry to announce that I will be leaving University Park Elementary School at the end of this school year. I have loved my time here, but as many of you know I am pursuing a doctorate at the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland. Unfortunately, my dissertation work will make it impossible to teach at the same time. The faculty, staff and community at UPES have been uniformly supportive and helpful with the library program. I thank you all for that and I hope that the program continues to grow and flourish.

Yours in reading,

Amanda Waugh

This past year has been an incredible experience for me as a special education resource teacher.  So it is with mixed emotions that I bid you farewell.   Prior to coming to University Park I served as a Principal in a non-public special education day school.  I have recently been offered the position of school Principal at a different non-public school serving children with autism ages 6 to adult.   Therefore, May 31, 2016 will be my last day at University Park Elementary school.  I will take with me the wonderful memories of working with my great group of students and their families.  I was also very fortunate to get to know the rest of the student body during either my morning duty, lunch duty, or school events.  University Park is a special place with a rich tradition of providing quality instruction and opportunities for social and personal growth for children.

It is truly a blessing to come to work every day with such a dedicated faculty.  I learned so much working side by side with this talented group of educators and related service providers.  From the moment I walked into the front office I knew that I was in the right place.  It saddens me to leave such a great environment but I have an opportunity to continue not only helping children with special needs but also lead a staff that seems equally committed to helping children and their families.

The University Park parents have been awesome!  The level of parental involvement that I have witnessed over the past year was like nothing I have seen at other schools where I worked in the past.  Thank you for all of the support this year and for trusting us with children.  I will miss you all very much and I look forward to coming back to visit in the near future.
