EAGLE NEWS!!!

March 2, 2016

Message from Ms. Davis

Keeping our students safe at school is a top priority! In light of the disturbing news in the media involving sexual abuse allegations of elementary school-aged students and a classroom aide, I have been very proactive in making certain that we are vigilant at all times. We must ensure that at University Park, we are protected from such heinous crimes against children. This effort will not only involve our staff members, but we need the help of everyone in our school community.

Parents and/ or Guardians: Please make certain that your volunteer information is updated with the main office. Anyone working inside our classrooms, accompanying students on field trips, or volunteering in any capacity at our school MUST be fingerprinted. No exceptions!

Please always have your ID ready to be presented in the Main Office every time you visit University Park. We have a systemic security screening system in place that will update your information when your ID is scanned. This is a systemic requirement in order to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

All Principals in PGCPS attended a mandatory systemic training February 18, 2016, to address the recent occurrences around child abuse. All  University Park ES staff members were retrained February 23-24 on PGCPS policies and expectations for handling such matters.  Our Professional School Counselor, Ms. Bennett, is also very proactive and involved in supporting this effort.  Thank you in advance for your assistance and cooperation!  The next Eagle Newsletter will come home with students March 16, 2016.  If you need anything between now and then don’t hesitate to contact me via email Toi.Davis@pgcps.org or 301-985-1898.

Azalea Classic

Join the UPES community for some fun and fitness at this year's Azalea Classic on Saturday, April 16th! The University Park Azalea Classic includes three races: 1K, 1-Mile and 5K. Our students have been hard at work training for the race in their UPES gym class so make sure to let your student have their chance to shine by joining their peers at the Azalea Classic! All proceeds from the event benefit the kids at UPES. The Northwestern High School Marching Band plays before the race and there is a great DJ and dancing on the basketball court after the race! Find out more or register at www.azaleaclassic.com. Events start at 8:30 a.m. at UPES (corner of Queens Chapel Road and Underwood Street in UP). Questions? Contact Race Director Sara Nelkin at saranelkin@gmail.com.

Community Meeting

Please join us tonight at 6:00 p.m. to share your input regarding our school priorities as we prepare the FY 2016-2017 budget.  Community members will learn about the Student  Based Budgeting process and discuss what our priorities should be to ensure our vision of academic achievement for all students.  There will be no decisions made at this meeting but the final budget will be shared with community members in May highlighting how the community input was used.  Any parent who is unable to make the meeting should use the link below to provide their input. The link will be available to all community members until March 4, 2016.
