Message from Ms. Davis

I hope everyone enjoyed their Snowcation and is ready to return to work and school.  I received great news this weekend that I’m eager to share.  The Talented and Gifted office shared with me that University Park ES will receive the Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) Award from the Maryland State Department of Education.  We are extremely proud to receive this award as this is quite an accomplishment and a testament to the quality work that we do every day for the students at UPES.   Please join me in  thanking our outstanding staff for all of their hard work, the PTA for their support, and  special thank yous to Ms. Jackson and Ms. Hamer for going above and beyond to ensure we had the necessary artifacts to earn this award.  I am extremely happy for our school and honored to be the principal of UPES.  Our next newsletter will be published February 17, 2016.  In the meantime, if you need anything between now and then don’t hesitate to contact me via email Toi.Davis@pgcps.org or 301-985-1898.    



Black History Month

The Social Studies Committee has a number of exciting activities planned to celebrate Black  History Month. Trivia questions about famous African Americans will be read on the morning announcements and  the winner(s) will be announced and awarded their prize(s) in the afternoon. Classroom teachers and  students will create a poster representing a famous activist that they studied in class. Teachers and students will also complete a number of activities in relation to Black History Month that they may later share with the school via photos, video, etc. Finally, the Music teachers will work with students to put on a performance for the entire school Wednesday February 17th for 2 performances during the school day.   


Box Tops

Please continue to send in your Box Tops.  We have collected 1,400 Box Tops so far and we would love to have more.


February Fundraiser

Our February fundraiser will be Monday, February 15 at Flippin' Pizza in Hyattsville, MD.  Starting at 10:30 AM and lasting until the closing of the store at 10:00 PM, a portion of the proceeds will go toward the Chorus students going to  Carnegie Hall when you tell the staff you are buying on behalf of University Park Elementary School.

Hyattsville MS Creative & Performing Arts Program

OPEN APPLICATION for Hyattsville MS Creative & Performing Arts Program! The Creative & Performing Arts application is now open for rising 7th grade students who are interested in auditioning for the CPA program at Hyattsville MS.  Please read the following information to find, complete and submit your application before MARCH 12, 2016.

Note: Before you begin, check SCHOOL FINDER http://gis.pgcps.org/schoolfinder/findschool2.asp to locate YOUR CPA School  

  1. Visit https://sites.google.com/a/pgcps.org/cvpa-vpa-application-process/hyattsville-middle-cpa to read and select one of the disciplines that your child would like to audition for. Categories include: Dance, Music (Instrumental & Vocal), Visual Arts, TV/Media Production & Creative Writing

  2. Gather all required information to complete your application:

  • Student ID # (found on progress reports & report cards)

  • Resume (listing academic & artistic accomplishments)

  • Two SEALED recommendation forms (follow instructions online for recommendation form requirements)

  • Current school year report card (must denote a minimum of 2.0+ GPA for each quarter)

  • Copy of transcript

  1. Download, save and print your application OR complete your application online. If you are mailing your application, be sure to include all required forms. The application must be received in the HMS CPA office before March 12, 2016. LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!

  2. If COMPLETED APPLICATION and ALL required documents are received by March 12, 2016, your child will receive an audition date and time approximately (4) weeks after the application window closes.

  3. FOR STUDENTS- On the day of your Audition:

  • Be prepared to write a short essay explaining why you want to attend the Creative & Performing Arts Program at Hyattsville MS

  • You will write a personal paragraph (no more than 150 words) answering the following questions:

  1. Why would you like to be a student in the CPA program?

  2. How would your school experience at a CPA school be different than another school?

  3. Describe what your academic and artistic contributions to the CPA program will be. *You will have 15 minutes to complete this task.

Math

Magnificent things are happening during math instruction at UPES!!

All students at UPES are learning mathematical concepts through hands-on activities, manipulatives, and real life applications. Teachers are using the 8-mathematical practices to guide their instruction. If you have any questions regarding math instruction please contact your child’s math teacher.

All students in grades 2-4 have access to First-In-Math. It’s a fantastic tool to help building numeracy fluency, problem solving, skill sets, work-out gyms, Know & Show and to monitor students’ progress. Have your child log onto First-in-Math.com to start earning stickers today! Currently Team Young (2nd grade) has taken the lead in our First-in-Math challenge. As a school we a rank # 3  for our cluster. With your help we can take the lead.


NEED HELP WITH MATH HOMEWORK?

COUNT ON US

The two-hour call-in show provides mathematical instruction to elementary and middle school students seeking homework help. Students can submit their math questions by emailing cou@pgpcs.org or by calling the Count on Us hotline at 301-772-0080. PGCPS math teachers will provide live, on-air instruction to questions submitted before and during the show. Comcast channel 96 and Verizon channel 38.  Count on Us airs on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.


Peace Week

February 8- February 11th is designated as Peace Week.  During this time, Ms. Bennett and her G.O.L.D Team members will host a number of activities to celebrate Peace Week.  If at all possible, we’d like students and staff to wear the colors below on the designated days.

Read Across America

To celebrate Read Across America this March, Pre-K through Second grade will host the Annual Dr. Seuss Green Eggs & Ham Breakfast. We are excited to sing songs from Seussical the Musical, while enjoying a plate of green eggs and ham. Volunteers and staff will dress as their favorite Seuss characters and hopefully hear a story from a Cat in a Hat! Join in the fun the morning of March 1st by volunteering to cook or serve breakfast.

Write A Book

The final Write-A-Book stories were submitted in early January. Thanks to the hard work of Becky Widman and Kris Moss, a a team of volunteers came together to help students bind them with beautiful fabric. The stories were amazing and diverse - much like University Park Elementary School. The books told stories of international trips, imagined alien encounters, and rhapsodized about underwater worlds.  The date for the author's tea will be announced shortly, so keep an eye out!
