 EAGLE NEWS!!!

November 18, 2015

Message from Ms. Davis

Thank you to all of the families who attended the Principal’s Coffees in October and November.  A huge thank you to Ms. Cruz who organized these wonderful events.  She pounded the pavement to garner donations from various businesses to ensure the events were top shelf and worthy of our community.  I couldn’t have done it without her!!!  I’d also like to thank Mrs. Cynthia McCabe for providing me with a one on one tutorial session so that UPES can enter the Twitterverse.  We are now officially on Twitter so please follow us @UPSoaringEagles to receive updates on all of the wonderful things happening at our school.  The next newsletter will be published December 2, 2015.  If you need me between now and then, please contact me at 301-985-1898 or Toi.Davis@pgcps.org.

First Quarter Honor Roll Assemblies

The Honor Roll Assemblies will be held in the cafeteria for students in grades 2-6 on November 23, 2015.  The assembly will begin at 8:15 a.m. for students in grades 2-3.  The assembly for grades 4-6 will begin at 9:00 a.m. Students have the opportunity to earn the Principal’s Honor Roll, Honor Roll, Eagle Effort, and Attendance Awards.  Attendance Awards will be given to students in their homerooms.

Students in grades 2-6 who qualify for each level of honor roll will be identified by the Department of Student Applications based on grades entered on student report cards in elementary schools.

The following criteria will be used to identify students at each level:

a. Principal’s Honor Roll: Students with at least a 4.0 GPA with no grade on the report card below an “A”.

b. Honor Roll: Students with at least a 3.0 GPA or higher with no grade lower than a “C”.

UPES 2015 Winter Concert!

Monday, December 14, 2015

6:30 pm

Season's greetings! The Music Department of UPES would like to invite all students, family, friends, faculty, and more to our 2015 Winter Concert. The event will take place at 6:30 PM in the school gymnasium.  Please come listen to what is sure to be a wonderful performance from the chorus, band, and orchestra programs.  We hope to see you all there!

Important information: Student performers are to report to UPES no later than 6:00 PM wearing black bottoms and a white top.

Write-A-Book

Write-A-Book is optional for all students, but despite that over 50 students in grades Kindergarten to Six have signed up! The first round of drafts are rolling in. There are entries in every category, poetry: non-fiction, illustrated fiction, and picture books. The Write-A-Book committee is excited to read them over and provide feedback in the next few weeks. We will return drafts to students after Thanksgiving break to allow students time to consider suggestions, make edits, and refine their stories.

Parent Engagement Corner

Our “Coffee with the Principal” Meetings for grades Kindergarten through 6th grade gave parents an opportunity to meet other parents, participate in an interactive game that tested their knowledge of UPES staff, policies and procedures while giving them a chance to show off their competitive edge! Most importantly, parents were fully engaged during our Q&A sessions and received clarification on their important questions directly from Principal Davis. Stay tuned for more “parent engagement” activities to come!

Thank you

We would like to thank Wegmans in Woodmore, Starbucks in College Park and La Flor de Puebla Bakery in Riverdale for donating breakfast, refreshments and coffee for all THREE of our “Coffee with the Principal” Meetings. Their continued support allowed us to provide parents with quality food and beverages to make our meetings a delightful success. Next time you visit their business, please thank them for their support!

Mark you calendars!

UPES will hold a new and gently used toy and book drive beginning Dec. 7th! As you prepare to shop for gifts this holiday season, look for any toys and/or books your child has outgrown & is willing to part ways with, and kindly drop them in the bins located by the front office beginning Dec. 7th! The items collected will benefit less fortunate families and their children in nearby areas. We thank you for your support!
