Message from Ms. Davis

Welcome Back!  I hope everyone had an enjoyable and restful Spring Break.  Hopefully, you’ve heard about our all school breakfast program that began this week.  I received positive feedback from students, parents, and staff regarding the program.  We are fine tuning the logistics each day but students were excited about eating in the classroom with their friends and teachers.   One student asked me if we could include eggs on the menu which is a positive sign that students are enjoying breakfast. Azalea Classic Spirit Week, April 13-20

Thursday, April 16- Team Jersey day – wear a shirt or jersey of your favorite team

Friday, April 17 - Azalea Classic Day – Wear a previous Azalea Classic shirt, or a shirt the color of an Azalea, red, pink or white.

Monday, April 20 – Wear your NEW Azalea Classic shirt and medals from  other years

 

Run or Walk the Azalea Classic 5K THIS SATURDAY!

It’s not too late to sign up for the University Park Azalea Classic, which will take place THIS SATURDAY! This run and walk on April 18 is a great way to engage with the community, get some exercise and help kids all at the same time!

 

Registration includes: raffle entry for great prizes, high-quality colorful T-shirt with a custom design (this year by town resident and artist Joel Floyd – thank you so much Joel!), medals for all kids participating in the 1K and 1M races, and certificates for winners of each age/gender category.  

 

Involving people of all ages, the event promotes good health for the whole town, while boosting the community spirit that University Park is known for. We are lucky to attract many people from University Park, College Heights Estates, College Park and Hyattsville as well as people from the entire metro region and farther away for this event—everyone from avid runners looking for a new course to grandparents from out of town who turn up to witness the spectacle!  Proceeds from the University Park Azalea Classic benefit the kids at University Park Elementary School (UPES), purchasing things such as books, supplies, and special opportunities they would not otherwise have given tight budgets.

 

Feel free to walk the race. Our course features rolling hills in a quiet residential neighborhood with streets largely closed to traffic during the race. We finish up with a DJ and prizes at our post-race party.  

 

Events kick off at 8:30 a.m. at UPES (corner of Queens Chapel and Underwood in UP).

Cricket Is Here!

UPES is participating in the BEST Cricket League, which is the first elementary school cricket league in the nation. This year there are 12 teams participating in the tournament with 8 teams from Bowie and 4 teams from the College Park area. Our team comprises of 16 players from 3rd grade to 6th grade. Cricket practices started on Monday, March 16. The team practices every Monday and Wednesday from 6:00pm – 7:30pm at UPES. The kids are learning the game very quickly and are getting better and better after each practice. On Monday, March 30, we had a Pre-Season game against Hollywood ES and won 56 – 24. Each team will play 4 first round matches followed by the playoffs. The schedule for UPES first round matches is given below

 

The kids are having so much fun learning and playing cricket.

Destination Imagination

Come support our University Park Destination Imagination teams at the State Tournament on April 18, 2015 at University of Maryland Baltimore County. We are proud to have two teams that have advanced to this level solving the Creature Feature challenge.

Mr. Moss’ Apple Pie Wizards, who came in 2nd place at the county level, will be performing at 10:20 a.m. in the Academic Services room 119. His team players are Kira, Margo, Emily, Owen, and Anika and they will be building a creature that uses technical methods to perform team-chosen actions.

 

Ms. Treado's University Park MindPopperPenguins placed 2nd place at the county level. This team had story of adventure with a creature as a character that used technical methods to demonstrate features of a world where the story is set. Her team members are Larissa, Liliyah, Leo, Luca, and Julia. Their performance will be at 12:40 p.m. in the Game Room in The Commons.

The Awards Ceremony will be at 6:30 in the Retriever Activity Center. Come and regale in the celebration for the teams.

Open House

The Open House for interested parents who are new to UPES will be Monday, April 20, 2015, 8:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m.  Please invite your neighbors with young children who aren’t in school just yet or who may have children who attend other schools to our Open House. Mr. Kasanje and teachers in grades 1 and 2 will speak with parents about their wonderful programs.  Parents will also have the opportunity to tour the primary classrooms and main building to see our wonderful school in action.

Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Registration

Registration for Pre-K and Kindergarten for SY2015-16 began Tuesday, April 13, 2015, at 8:30 am. For Pre-K, your child must be 4 by September 1, 2015, and for Kindergarten, your child must be 5 by September 1, 2015.  You will need to bring with you your child's birth certificate, immunization records, and proof of residency (current mortgage statement, property tax statement, lease, etc.)  If you are registering your child for Pre-K, you will also need to bring with you 2 current consecutive pay stubs.

 

TAG Open House

Please come and join us for our TAG Open House on April 23, 2015, at 2:15-3:30 p.m. in the Media Center. A presentation of our educational program for our gifted learners will be presented via slideshow for parents. You will also have the opportunity to interact with our TAG in the Regular Classroom (TRC) teachers for a question and answer session. Afterwards, you can browse through our display of work samples from our highly able students.  If you are planning to attend our Open House, please contact either Ms. Juanita Pray or Mrs. Devilan Cowherd (301-985-1898) by April 16, 2015.  

 

Note: The meeting is being held at 2:15 p.m. to afford parents the opportunity to speak with the TAG teachers in grades 2-6. 

 

Take Your Child to Work Day

Prince George's County Public Schools will observe the national “Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Day” event on Thursday, April 23, 2015.

PGCPS Attendance Procedures
To maintain accurate student attendance, all students accompanying their parents to work must observe the following procedures:

If you plan to have your child accompany you to work, you must notify your child’s school PRIOR to Thursday, April 23rd.

Students are responsible for obtaining any schoolwork that they will miss. All schoolwork must be completed in accordance with the teacher’s directions.

When your child returns to school, she or he must bring a letter on your company letterhead stating that she or he accompanied you to work. As is the case for ALL absences, the school must receive this letter within 72 hours of your child’s return to school.

For attendance purposes, the day will be counted as an excused absence; however, if the above procedures are not followed, the day will be counted as an unexcused absence. As a reminder, an excused or unexcused absence will affect your child’s perfect attendance record.

Testing Update

 UPES Fifth grade students completed the MSA Science test yesterday and today. The test was administered online and over two days for approximately two hours each day.  The test included both selected response and constructed response items.

In April and May, students in grades 3 through 6 will participate in PARCC EOY (End of the Year) testing.  Testing will start the week of
April 20 and conclude the first week in May.  The dates of testing are below.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE SURE YOUR STUDENT DOES HIS OR HER BEST JOB.  PLEASE…MAKE SURE…

Your child arrives to school on time.

Your child eats a substantial breakfast in the morning that will give him/her the necessary    energy and alertness for participation in testing.

Your child gets a good night’s sleep the night before each testing day.

Your child is in school every testing day. 

You encourage your child to do his/her best!

Transitional Students

Students transitioning to a new school as a result of a promotion to a different educational level, boundary change, participation in a specialty school or change in residence must provide proof of residency. Proof of residency may be established by any of the following documents: settlement papers, lease/rental agreement, deed of property, mortgage statement, letter from apartment complexes on official letterhead, or a current property tax bill.  These documents must be originals.  Settlement papers, lease agreement, and rental agreements must be signed and dated by all parties.   Parents of students in grade 6 must come to UPES to update proof of residency by Wednesday, May 13, 2015.  Pre-K students, unless on an approved transfer, will be enrolled at their neighborhood school for the following year.    

 

Welcome

Tyrone Frazier is joining the team at University Park Elementary school as Resource Teacher beginning in May. Mr. Frazier is replacing Brandy Bradford who has accepted a position in the Extended School Year Office.  Mr. Frazier was raised in the Washington DC metropolitan area which included attending a PGCPS elementary school.  He has dedicated his life to working with children with special needs. His most recent experiences include serving as a school administrator at a local separate day school program.  It must be known that Mr. Frazier only cheers for the home team.  Hopefully the Redskins will once again rise to the top of the NFL!  He is looking forward to providing quality instruction to children at University Park through differentiated instruction, hands on activities, and real world educational experiences.  He is looking forward to joining the UP Community!
