Newsletter Wednesday April 1 2015

 University Park Elementary School

April 1, 2015

Message from Ms. Davis

I am pleased to announce that we are no longer in danger of losing a classroom teaching position as a result of our School Based Budget projections. Through the collaborative efforts of PGCPS, the PTA Executive Board, and community members, our staffing remains intact. I’d like to thank the community members who supported our school as we worked through the process of completing our school budget for next school year.  It is truly amazing what can be accomplished when schools and parents work together on behalf of students.  Additionally, if you were unable to attend the Dr. Seuss Breakfast, please use this link to view this wonderful event.  The next Eagle Newsletter will come home with students April 22, 2015.  If you need anything between now and then don’t hesitate to contact me via email or 301-985-1898.

Last Day of School

As you know, seven days have been missed this year due to inclement weather. Our school calendar had four inclement weather make-up days scheduled: June 18, 19, 22, 23, 2015, leaving us with three additional days to address. Thursday, March 26th, the Maryland State Board of Education granted a waiver for two of the three days. The following outlines how we will adjust the calendar to accommodate the days missed:

April 2 has been converted into an instructional day with a two-hour early dismissal for students.

Spring Break, April 3-10, for students and teachers is not affected.

High school graduation dates are not impacted. View high school graduation dates at:

Inclement weather make-up days will be June 18, 19, 22, and 23. On June 22, school will dismiss two-hours early for students. June 23 is the last day for students and school will dismiss two-hours early.

The last day for teachers is June 24.

Maryland Meals for Achievement (MMFA) Breakfast

The MMFA Breakfast in the Classroom program officially begins April 13, 2015, at UPES. The MMFA program is a voluntary program for students and staff who elect to eat breakfast at our school.  Providing breakfast for the larger school should not alter our morning buses as all school buses typically arrive to UPES no later than 7:35 a.m.  Students will enjoy breakfast in the classroom from 7:40-8:00 a.m. daily.

Not only is this a wonderful opportunity for students, there are also many volunteer opportunities available for parents.   Parents can assist with opening containers, clean up, recycling, etc…  If you are interested in showing your support, please contact your child’s teacher via email or phone.   Additionally, the April Breakfast Menu is attached to this publication for your reference.  If you’d like additional information about the nutritional aspects of the breakfast items, please follow the steps below to access the Food and Nutrition Services webpage.

Ever since rehearsals began in January, students who auditioned in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades have been busily preparing Seussical Jr.!  Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat, and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in Seussical Jr. a fantastical musical extravaganza from TONY winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. Performances of the show will take place on the UPES stage on May 28th, 29th, and 30th.  More details will follow, but mark your calendars today!
