     Principal’s Corner:  Our 3rd – 6th graders did a wonderful job taking the Reading Maryland School Assessments (MSA) this week!  Thank you for making sure they were at school on time, rested and full of a good breakfast!  They will take the Math MSA on March 15th and 16th.  It is imperative that our students are at school those days!  Thank you so much for your support!

    

    The PTA's Wine and Cheese Silent Auction was a smashing success!!  The PTA raised over $12,000, thanks to your support!  Many thanks to the incredible volunteers who planned and carried through the event:  Carrie Murphy and Kris Moss (co-chairs), Kathy Hotakanian, Lily Baker, Gayatri Varma,  Becky Widman, Christine Dawson, Michelle Hermanson, Maby Palmissano, Chuck Bury, Suzie Whelton, Sheilla Salicrup, Anthony Clark, Mayra Darnell, Aaron Springer, Bob Moss, Steve Murphy, Karen Ahalt, Mike Baker, Lisa Beckman, Carmen Booker, Dana Campbell, Clara Carey, Bill Carey, Fabi Caulkins, Maria Kisker, Deborah Levenson, Joan Leonard, Lis Fost Maring, Annarita Mariotti, Kristin McCue, Birgit Meade, Louise Niepoetter, Sonja Skeete, Sarah Starrett, Sarah Treado, Lisa Tate, Ruth Anne White, the Band “The Lonesome Valley Ramblers,” including parents Curtis Ramsey-Lucas and Andrew Widman, and Wallace Presbyterian Church!!  Thanks to everyone who made donations to the Auction!!

     Speaking of the PTA, many thanks for the financial support for the Yojo MSA assembly, and the snacks for the Homework/MSA/Science Fair Clubs – as well as snacks for our 3rd – 6th graders on MSA testing days!!  We appreciate the PTA’s generosity tremendously!

     We are holding our Career Day on Wednesday, April 27th from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.!  If you would be willing to speak during Career Day, please contact our counselor, Marlene Bennett, by email (marlene.bennett@pgcps.org) or by school phone (301)985-1898.  Even if you only have a half hour to spare, we’d love to have you!

     One of our parents, Eric Maning, is the main attraction at our Family Fun Danceon Thursday, March 17th, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in our gym!  This is a fantastic opportunity to come have fun with your kids, free of charge!  So put on your dancing shoes and we’ll see you there!

     Order your yearbook today!  They are only $17.00 (payable to UPES), and make a wonderful memento of this school year.  Order forms are due on March 29th, and the yearbooks will arrive in May.

     Save the date – Saturday, April 9th – for the 10th Anniversary Azalea Classic!!  We will also be celebrating the 75th anniversary of University Park!   This is a 1K and 5K race sponsored by the PTA to raise funds for our school!  The Northwestern High School Band will be there, as well as many businesses, food, and a DJ!  Look for the flyer in the Wednesday Envelope, and sign up today!  The planning meeting for the Azalea Classic is tonight, Wednesday, March 9th at 6 p.m. in the library, right before the PTA meeting!  Please join us!

     Kindergarten registration will begin on April 4 at all boundary schools for children that will be turning 5 by September 1, 2011.  Detailed information will be posted on the pgcps.org website by March 1, outlining registration policies and procedures.

     Prekindergarten registration will begin on April 11 at all boundary schools for all children that will be turning 4 by September 1, 2011. As of June 1, families may register at any elementary school that still has available seats. This is an income eligible program. No above income children will be accepted. Transportation is provided to boundary schools only. Detailed information will be posted on the website, www.pgcps.org, by March 1, outlining registration policies and procedures.

Congratulations to our Destination Imagination Blue Goddesses team!  They came in third place this past Saturday at the tournament, and we are so proud of them!  Way to go, Rory, Jade, Keyla, Emily, Miranda, Anna, and Madeleine!!  Many thanks to Mary Resing, Kitty Moore, and Kris Moss for coaching the team!
