The Eagle Express

University Park Elementary

September 22nd, 2010

Principal’s Corner:  We had a wonderful turnout for our Back to School Nights!  It was great seeing all of you, and I’m sure the information the teachers gave out was very helpful!  Please always feel free to contact us if you have any concerns or questions.  You are our most valuable partners in educating your children!

I hope you will join the PTA!  It is only $5.00 per member, and very worthwhile!  The PTA does a fantastic job of supporting our students and staff, and they truly bring our school community together!  Please fill out the form at the bottom of this newsletter and send it into school in a sealed envelope if you’d like to join!

Our counselor, Ms. Bennett, is collecting school supplies for students who are not able to afford them.  If you would like to donate some of the following, please send them into school with Ms. Bennett’s name on it!  We are looking for:

  • Backpacks
  • Pencils
  • Crayons
  • Glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Erasers
  • Rulers
  • Composition Books
  • Pencil Boxes
  • Pocket folders
  • Spiral notebooks

             Thank you!

I’d like to welcome our new second grade teacher, Ms. Patricia Haskins!  She comes to us from Rosa Parks Elementary, and we are glad to have her!  With the addition of the new second grade, class size has gone down to 23 students!

Parents, you can check your child’s progress online through the Family Portal on SchoolMax.  You can see attendance, grades, discipline referrals, progress reports, report cards, and check the profile page for correct phone numbers, addresses, and email addresses.  If you don’t have your secret code to get into the Portal, please contact Mr. Clark (aclark@pgcps.org).  He would be happy to help you!

Parents, if you would like to volunteer or chaperone this year, you must have a background check.  If you plan to chaperone at Camp Schmidt (5th grade) or any trip where you will lead a group of students without a staff member, you must have fingerprinting done.  Below is a list of places, dates and times that background checks and fingerprinting will take place:

9/23/10 – Laurel Elementary, 5:30 – 8 p.m.

10/5/10 – Greenbelt Elementary, 6 – 9 p.m.

10/27/10 – Hyattsville Elementary, 6 – 7:30 p.m.

     10/28/10 – Riverdale Elementary, 6 – 8 p.m.

Also, parents, please make sure that we have your telephone numbers if they change from the ones written on your family card.  We need to make sure we can reach you in case of an emergency!

On Thursday, Sept. 16th, the police notified our school that a robber they were pursuing was in our neighborhood.  We immediately went into lockdown so that everyone would remain safe.  The police caught the bad guy right before dismissal, and the lockdown was lifted.  Usually, I would contact you through email and phone to let you know of the situation – but I was at a meeting!  We will be sure to have Ms. Freeman or Mr. Clark contact you in the future if I am away from school.
