The Eagle Express
University Park Elementary
April 21st, 2010
Principal’s Corner: The Azalea Classic was fantastic!! We had an excellent turnout, and the weather was gorgeous! Over 400 people participated in the event, which raised funds for our PTA. I think everyone had a blast! We also collected way over 245 pairs of shoes for Africa – one of our students, Joshua Mackall, brought in 80 pairs! I cannot thank Sarah Elder enough for chairing the Classic. She did a phenomenal job! Thanks also to Kim Fisher, and everyone else. I am thanking my lucky stars that I work at University Park Elementary, in such a caring, involved, tight-knit community that truly puts children first.
Today is Secretaries’ Day! I’d like to thank our fantastic secretaries, Marcie Ramsey and Valerie Lee, for all they do. Our school could not run without them!
Many thanks to the Town of University Park! Mickey Beall, the director of Public Works, donated recycling bins to our school to get our recycling program up and running again! We will now be able to put out our bins every Thursday! Many thanks to Kris Moss for getting the ball rolling, and to our Girl Scout troops for making recycling posters for every classroom!
We have eleven students who won in the Write a Book Contest! Some of them worked together, and some worked solo. Congratulations to Corron Davis and Antonio Sterling; Stella Hurtt and Clio Jensen; Keyla Brown and Rachel Hotakainen; James Dawson; Abigial Lopez-Freire; Chitra Pratap; and Donovan Arnason and Alex Martin! We are so proud of you!
The instrumental music concert was fantastic! The students did a beautiful job, and I know how much work went into their performance! Thank you, parents, for your support at home! Thanks to all of the families who brought treats for the reception after the concert! The last instrumental concert will be on May 19th.
On April 23rd, the PTA is holding an Open House at 8:30 a.m. for families planning to come to University Park Elementary next year! Spread the word – this is the perfect opportunity to hear about our school program and take a tour!
Also, on April 23rd, we are holding a 5th and 6th grade dance in the gym from 7-9 p.m.! ONLY University Park Elementary 5th and 6th graders are allowed to attend! This is NOT a date dance – everyone will be going as friends! Information will be sent home – it should be a lot of fun! Admission is only $3.00. Many thanks to Lisa Morrison for organizing the event, and to Jamie Morrison for DJing!
Teacher Appreciation Week is April 26th – 30th! This is a wonderful time to write a note of thanks to your child’s teacher. We have such a dedicated, caring staff who bring out the best in our students. Your children will be bringing home secret information this Friday, mwa ha ha! Be on the look out!
We will be celebrating Arbor Day with the Town of UP on Friday, April 30th at 12:50 p.m. on the Town Field. Our PreK, kindergarteners, first graders, and Ms. M. Young’s 4th grade homeroom will be presenting songs and poems. Feel free to join us!
Two of our parents, Kris Moss and Dana Campbell, have arranged for Sally Davies, an author/illustrator, to visit and talk with our students all day on May 4th! Many thanks to the PTA for funding this wonderful opportunity! Thanks, Kris and Dana!
The Science MSA will be given to our 5th graders on May 4th and 5th in the morning. Please try to make sure our students are in school, well rested, with a good breakfast on those days! We know they will ace the test!
