Principal’s Corner:  I hope everyone enjoyed Spring Break!  It’s great to be back in the swing of things again!  We have many exciting activities coming up this month that I know the students will enjoy!

Many thanks to the PTA for funding the “Notion of Motion” assembly on March 24th!  The students loved it and learned several laws of physics!  Thanks also to the PTA for funding the MSA Ice Cream – it was such a great reward at the end of testing!

I am thrilled to say that 94% of our students turned in a book log for the third quarter!  That’s higher than the last quarter, where 86% of our students turned one in! These individuals will be enjoying a Sock Hop this Friday during the school day.  Please encourage your child to dress in 1950’s clothes!  The staff will do the same!  Here are the percentages of book logs turned in for each grade level:

PreK –                    100%

K                             91%

1st Grade                 98%

2nd Grade                92%

3rd Grade                96%

4th Grade                 100%

5th Grade 76%

6th Grade 96%

Congratulations to our Di-Bot Destination Imagination Team!  They competed on Saturday, March 20th and won first place in their category!  The team will be going to the state competition to present their solution to the Di-Bot challenge next Saturday, April 10 at 10:40AM at UMBC.. They will be in the Physics Building in room 201.  Congrats to Brandon Scott, Maryanna Brogi, Jack McKeown, Henry Tuit-Farquhar, Jacob Burns, Caroline Ahalt, Gary Harris, and their coach, Mary Resing!

Our Career Day will take place on Thursday, April 22nd from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.  We would love for you to come showcase your career!  Any time you can volunteer that morning would be great!  If you are interested in participating, please fill out the form below and send it in to our counselor, Marlene Bennett.

Many thanks to Mrs. Baker for translating during a conference!  Also, many thanks to the parents, students, and family members who painted our stage black and for made props for the upcoming musical!  The stage looks quite professional now!

Mark your calendars for the Azalea Classic on Saturday, April 17th!  This is an amazing event that Sarah Elder and the PTA plan with the community to raise funds for our school!  47 teachers and staff members will be participating, and we hope you will, too!  Please go to www.azaleaclassic.com for more information, and to register for the event!

At school during the week of April 12th – 16th, we will be having Azalea Classic Spirit Week!  In order to pump up our students for the event, we are doing something special each day:

Monday – School Spirit Day (Wear your UPES t-shirt, or blue and white!)

Tuesday – Get Ready for the Dog Walk! (Dress like a dog, or bring a small stuffed animal dog to keep on your desk!)

Wednesday – What Shoe Doing on Saturday?  (Wear sneakers, and bring a pair of shoes to donate to communities in Ghana and Zambia!)

Thursday – Team Jersey Day (wear a shirt from your favorite team!)

Friday – Azalea Classic Day (Wear a shirt the color of an Azalea – red, pink or white!)

QuickStart Tennis will begin on Tuesday, April 20th!  This have transportation home from school. All tennis equipment will be provided.  Interested students should request a registration form from Ms. Neff.  This free class is limited to 80 students.  Last year over 100 program is open to all UPES students, grades 2-6.  Students must registered...so sign up quickly!  Please email any questions to christy.neff@pgcps.org.

On April 23rd, the PTA is holding an Open House at 8:30 a.m. for families planning to come to University Park Elementary next year!  Spread the word – this is the perfect opportunity to hear about our school program and take a tour!

Also, on April 23rd, we are holding a 5th and 6th grade dance in the gym from 7-9 p.m.!  ONLY University Park Elementary 5th and 6th graders are allowed to attend!  This is NOT a date dance – everyone will be going as friends!  Information will be sent home – it should be a lot of fun!  Admission is only $3.00.  Many thanks to Lisa Morrison for organizing the event, and to Jamie Morrison for DJing!

There are still some class pictures left, if you’d like to purchase one!  They are $11.66, and your check can be made out to UPES.

If you have a Target credit card, you can earn money for our school by enrolling in “Take Charge of Education.”  Whenever you use your red card, Target will donate a percentage of your purchases to University Park Elementary!  We can use this money for anything we need for the classroom, library or playground.  Designate our school today at www.target.com/tcoe.  Right now, we only have 19 people signed up!
