The Eagle Express UPDATE
University Park Elementary
February 19th, 2010
Parents, here are updates to our schedule, because of the snow!
Our Instrumental Concert has been rescheduled for April 14th! Performances will be at 8:20 a.m., 9:00 a.m., and 7:30 p.m. The instrumental students will have an after-school rehearsal with Mr. Spitzberg on Monday, April 12th.
The new date to turn in sponsor forms for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Math-A-Thon is March 2nd. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Booker!
There is a slight change in MSA Spirit Week for the whole school during the week of March 1st! We will wear hats on Tuesday, to coincide with Read Across America Day (Dr. Seuss’ birthday.) Dress for Success will now take place on Wednesday. Here’s the updated Spirit Week:
Monday, March 1st – Sneak up on the MSA! (Wear your sneakers!)
Tuesday, March 2nd –Hats Off to the MSA (Wear a hat!)
Wednesday, March 3rd – Dress for Success! (Dress up day!)
Thursday, March 4th – Don’t sweat the test! Just do your best! (Wear a sweat suit!)
Friday, March 5th – Wear your UPES shirt/colors for the Pep Rally!
We do not have a date yet for rescheduling class pictures, but we expect to, soon! If you have sent in picture money, we will keep it safe.
Because of the snow, our drop off and pick up routines at school have changed. Because of the snow in the back, everyone will be entering and dismissing through the front doors. This can get a little crazy, especially with the huge snow piles and limited space. Chief Wynnyk has asked that all of the bus students be dismissed before the walkers to keep everyone safe. That means that the walkers will be dismissed around 2 p.m. instead of 1:55 p.m. I really appreciate your patience! If you need to get your walker earlier, please come into the front office and you can sign him/her out.
Also, because of the snow, the drop-off zone for students who travel to school in cars will only be on Queen’s Chapel. The police are helping the children get into school safely. Please respect this procedure until the snow melts away! Thank you!!
Many thanks to the PTA for treating our Science Fair judges to breakfast and lunch on Feb. 4th! Because of snow, the Science Fair was held a day late, and the PTA still brought delicious food that everyone enjoyed! Many thanks to Karen Ahalt and Suzie Whelton for setting everything up! Many thanks to Debbie Levenson and the PTA for treating our staff to bagels and cream cheese every month!
Many thanks to Karin Carlson, Karen Ahalt, Carmen Booker, Michelle Hermanson, and Sonja Parker for helping us sort the Joe Corbi orders and deliver them! We got it all done in record time!
Many thanks to everyone who helped us shovel out the school and the neighborhood! Nine students came to shovel the front of the school and sidewalks for Community Service, and Rosanna Weaver organized a shovel brigade to work on the neighborhood sidewalks and bus stops! Many others also did shoveling so the students could come to school safely this week! Many thanks also to Chief Wynnyk, Mayor Tambori, and Mickey Beall in Public Works for all of their help with traffic, clearing the snow, and making arrangements for the staff to park at the church!
There has been discussion about the rescheduling of the Maryland School Assessments (MSA). To date these are scheduled to occur on March 9, 10, 16, and 17th. Any change in this schedule will be reported to you through a school communication. We have not heard anything from the Maryland State Department of Education or the PGCPS Testing Office on this issue. We will keep you updated.
