UPES:  Unity, Pride, Excellence, Success!

Principal’s Corner:  I hope that everyone had a wonderful Winter Break!  It was great to have the snow days before vacation, but it also made it difficult to wrap things up here at school before the new year.  It has been delightful seeing everyone getting back into the swing of things!  We are entering a serious time of the school year, with MSA testing drawing closer.  Your support with homework and class assignments is very much needed and appreciated.  You are a huge reason why our students succeed!

Many thanks to the Town of University Park for the gorgeous clock installed next to our flagpole!  I know it was many years in the making; it is truly magnificent and will be a landmark for years to come!

Our choir did an excellent job performing at PG Plaza on Dec. 18th!  Thanks to all of the parents who came to support them.  Many thanks to Mr. Fominaya and Mr. Tatum for leading the choir, to Mr. Spitzberg for taking movie clips, and to Aaron Springer for taking photos!  Our choir will be performing next at the Elementary Choral Festival at Bowie High School on Jan. 14th at 12:30 p.m.!  We wish them lots of luck!

Many thanks to Mrs. Cathy Flynn, Christine Dawson, and Deborah Levenson for working with our school newspaper reporters – the newspaper has been printed and it is outstanding!!  Every student has received a copy – please check it out.  Many thanks also to Mr. Clark for blocking out the newspaper on the computer and printing it out!

Many thanks to Brownie Troop #1507 for collecting canned goods from the neighborhood to donate to our Food Drive!  The food was given to families for the holidays, and was very much appreciated!  Also, many thanks to Riverdale Presbyterian Church for generously donating gift certificates to our families in need!

Information will be coming home about our new school-wide Book Log program!  This is a way to encourage all of our students to read!  Book logs are due on January 22nd, and everyone who turns one in will be treated to popcorn and a movie!

The second round of H1N1 FluMist vaccines will be offered to our students in January.   Children 9 years and younger must have a second dose of the H1N1 vaccine in order for it to be effective.  Permission forms are included in this Wednesday folder.  Please do not be worried if the previous FluMist dates are listed on the forms; they can be used for this vaccination as well.  We do not have a specific date yet on when the FluMist clinic will take place, but we’ll let you know as soon as we hear.

Thank you for remembering that the playground and field are reserved for our B&A students every day from 2:20 – 4:00 p.m.  This is to keep all of our children safe!

The PTA is spotlighting Becky Widman, co-chair of the New Comers Committee.  The committee is responsible for the summer playgroup get togethers, the ice cream social, the new parents wine and cheese, and the school open house.
