Admission Policy for 2012-2013
As a public charter school, Turning Point Academy accepts applications for Kindergarten through Eighth Grade for students residing anywhere in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The school does not base admission on race, color, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, religion or disability. TPA is a publicly funded character education public charter school and does not charge tuition. TPA adheres to all state and federal laws.
Turning Point Academy was the first Public Charter School to open in Prince George’s County in August of 2006. We are a character-based, family-oriented school that is committed to an academically rigorous program. Our school implements the “Hyde Process” that was developed in Bath, Maine to prepare high school students for success in life.
Applications for Lottery admission were made available on January 6, 2012 and the Lottery Deadline is March 16, 2012. Parents of children attending TPA will be requested to register their children for the upcoming school year. Enrollment for the following year will then be determined as follows:
- All re-enrolling students will be placed.
- Siblings of re-enrolling students that are entering the kindergarten or 6th grade will be placed once the sibling application has been submitted by the March 1, 2012 deadline. The sibling application is available on the Turning Point website at www1.pgcps.org/turningpoint.
- The lottery will be held on April 6, 2012. The lottery will consist of the names of all students whose parents have filled out and returned the application form to the school registrar or completed the online application form at www1.pgcps.org/turningpoint/. The list of applicants will be posted before the lottery to ensure that all applicants will be entered into the drawing. For each grade, applicant names will be drawn from a container and recorded on a spreadsheet. The student names in the number of the available spots will be announced as the lottery winners whereas the remainders will stay on the waiting list. If any winning student does not show up by the given registration deadline, student names will be called from the waiting list to fill that spot.
- During the school year, if a parent desires their child to attend TPA and the grade in which the child needs placement is full, that child will be placed on a waiting list. This list shall include the grade level needed and the date and time that the parent put their child on the list. When a space is available in a grade, the enrollment officer will refer to the waiting list and call the parents of the first child on the list to inquire if that child will attend. If the parent passes on enrollment at that time, the parent(s) of the next child will be called, and so on. In the event that there is a sibling of a child attending TPA on the waiting list, the sibling has first priority, regardless of date and time placed on the waiting list. The Sibling Deadline is March 1, 2012.
