Tips for Parent-Teacher Conferences

As a parent, you are your child’s first and most important teacher.  You and your child’s school have something in common: You both want your child to learn and do well.  When parents and teachers communicate, each person can share important information about your child’s talents and needs.  Parent-Teacher conferences are a great way to begin conversations about your child’s education. Here are some tips on how to prepare for Parent-Teacher conferences.

  • Before you go, review your child’s work and progress reports.
  •  Make a list of things you want to discuss at the conference.
  • Ask your child if there is anything that he/she would like to talk about with the teacher.
  •  During the conference focus on how the child is doing in school and how to support the child to do better.
  • Ask what you can do to at home to support your child.
  • Develop a plan that you and the teacher work out together and discuss the plan with your child.
  •  Stay in touch with the teacher regularly to discuss progress.
