How do we reform our
schools?
SSR has three goals: raising expectations, expanding opportunities, and enhancing support. Below are some of
the goals that will be implemented as part of Secondary School Reform.
Raising Expectations
- Revise current course and credit requirements
- Redesign the Individual Learning Plan (ILP)
instrument to better track academic progress (now the Personal Education Plan
or PEP)
- Train and hold counselors accountable for
enrolling students in rigorous academic coursework
- Provide better access to students and parents
about student course selection and college access
Expanding
Opportunities
- High School Academy Implementation
- Approve and support innovative schools of choice
that expand opportunities
- Implement interventions to turnaround
chronically low-performing schools
Enhancing Support
- Develop a strategic plan for creating a systemic
college-going culture that begins in Pre-K
- Continue, monitor and adjust implementation of
advisories in all high schools
- Provide professional development to secondary
teachers
- Support students transitioning to middle and
high school
