School History and Profile

“In l963 Community Builders, Incorporated, began to construct Springhill Lake Apartment Complex, described as the largest garden apartment complex on the East Coast by Jim Giese, Greenbelt City manager.  The developers studied Greenbelt’s design and largely replicated it in their 3000 unit plan.  Apartments with ample green space surrounded a central shopping area.  A swimming pool and a system of internal walkways were included.” Greenbelt, Maryland A Living Legacy of the New Deal by Cathy D. Springhill Lake Elementary School, named for the development surrounding it, was opened in January l966 with 12 classrooms.   Three additions were added in 1970, 1974 and l998 bringing the current number of classrooms with in the building to 36.  

There have been 3 principals from l966 to the present. 
The current principal, Linda Sherwood was appointed in 1990.

 We are the proud home of the Springhill Lake Eagles! 

At Springhill Lake Elementary School (SHL), our children begin in Head Start which is located off site. Kindergarten through the Fifth grade onsite.  We have approximately 680 students.

 Springhill Lake Elementary School is a comprehensive school that serves a culturally diverse community. As many as 70 different countries are represented.
Our students range in grades from Kindergarten to grade 5.
Our program also includes students who are part of a regional diagnostic
program for special education.The majority of our students live in a multi-family dwellings and are able to walk to school.
