What is the Early Childhood Special Education Preschool Program?

The Early Childhood Special Education preschool program provides special education for children from 3 and 5 years of age. Services are based on the child's identified strengths and needs with a focus on developmentally appropriate practices utilizing a transdisciplinary approach.

How do I make a referral for my child?

To refer a child to Prince George’s County Early Childhood Special Education Program call  Preschool Child Find: 301 925-6600.

    Who is eligible?

A comprehensive evaluation will be conducted to determine if a disability or developmental delay is present.  If your child qualifies as a student with a disability or developmental delay, a meeting is scheduled to develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The IEP will address your child's specific needs, identify goals, and objectives, and make recommendation for services as appropriate.

    What is an IEP?

An IEP is a plan of services individualized for each child and family. A team from a school  and the family develop the IEP.  As part of the IEP meeting, the team will review a continuum of services. The IEP will address your child's specific needs, identify goals, and objectives, and make recommendation for services as appropriate.

What kinds of services are available?

As part of the IEP meeting,  the team will review a continuum of services. Services could include special education, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.

     Where are services located?

When developing the IEP, the school team and the family will discuss where the child could best learn. Recommended services will be delivered in the least restrictive environment. This may be in a community preschool, public preschool or early childhood center. The service  recommendation is based on individual student strengths and needs.
