Advanced Placement United States History

<< Back to Social Studies High School Program

This course is designed to provide students with the analytical skills and factual knowledge to deal critically with the problems and themes in United States history.  The course prepares students for intermediate and advanced college courses by providing a rigorous curriculum equivalent to those made by full-year introductory college courses.  Students will learn to analyze historical materials and to weigh the evidence and interpretations presented in historical scholarship.  In particular, students will determine the relevance to a given problem and/or theme, the reliability, and importance of primary and secondary sources.  Students will investigate a variety of themes, including: American diversity, American identity, culture, demographic changes, economic transformations, environment, globalization, politics and citizenship, reform, religion, slavery and its legacies, and war and diplomacy.  By the completion of the course, students should develop the skills necessary to arrive at conclusions on the basis of informed judgment and to present reasons and evidence clearly and persuasively in essay format.  All assignments, debates, and projects will require the use of several primary sources, and students will have access to a number of on-line resources, including The Annals of American History and unitedstreaming to assist students with the skills necessary to achieve these goals.
