Opportunities for Students

Throughout the school, various opportunities are provided to students of Prince George's County Public Schools through the Social Studies department. Please review the information below to find out which opportunities might best suit your student. Also, please review the information regarding service learning requirements and opportunities.

EverFi Online Learning Opportunities: There are many resources for online learning for students to supplement  their face-to-face classroom experiences.

History Day: Students use primary and secondary resources to research a topic related to the National History Day theme. They use this knowledge to develop a project in one of four categories: research paper, exhibit, performance, or documentary. this year's theme is "Triumph and Tragedy in History."

Mock Trial: Students become the lawyers, plaintiffs, defendants, and witnesses as they bring a real court case to life. They compete against teams from other schools in Mock Trial Circuit 7.

Service Learning: The service learning component to education in the state of Maryland serves a myriad of purposes. By completing their service learning requirements, not only do students develop a deeper understanding of what it means to give to the community as a citizen, but it also affords students the opportunity to improve their academic skills as they apply school learning to the world around them. The following resources have been provided to give access to additional information regarding service learning requirements for Prince George's County Public Schools as well as ideas for ways to earn service learning credit:

  • Marlyand State Department of Education: provides a host of information pertaining to service learning reqirements in PGCPS and regarding service learning project options
  • The Social Studies curricula from grades 5 through 10 have infused service learning opportunities; hours are automatically earned upon successful completion of each of those grades.
