Dear Bulldog Scholars and Families,

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! I am humbled to once again be a part of the dedicated educators, students, parents, and community members who have made Samuel Chase Elementary School outstanding!

I trust that you and your family are having a wonderful summer and are eagerly anticipating the arrival of September 6th. Our instructional program for the 2017-2018 school year will continue to focus on the Reading, Writing, and reasoning in all content areas. Here at Samuel Chase ES, we believe that high expectations yield academic successes for all students.  Be assured that we are committed to doing our part in ensuring your child achieves academic excellence; we look forward to partnering with you to achieve this goal.  You play a key role in the academic success of our school; hence, school-parent communication is crucial. Our focus on instruction and learning will not be compromised. To further ensure a successful school year please:

Make your child’s prompt attendance to school a priority - Instruction begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. daily

Expect homework Monday through Friday and projects on a regular basis

Allot time for reading and practicing basic math facts with your child on a nightly basis

Return all requested forms and documents to school in a timely manner

Parents/Guardians, recognize that the expectations are high and that the instructional program will be rigorous and challenging, yet rewarding.  Thus, this year we will continue implementing rigorous reading, writing, and mathematics instruction as well as utilizing several resources to challenge our students. Our instructional program will be far more effective with your active participation. Please send your children to us well-behaved, on-time, future focused, equipped with the proper materials, and encouraged.  We, in-turn will send them home to you prepared to meet the demands of college and careers.  Your presence is not only welcomed, but it is greatly needed and appreciated!

Below you will find key information about the start of the school year.

School Hours: School begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 3:10 p.m.  Students are allowed to enter the building at 8:50 a.m. for breakfast.  Prior to that time, there is no adult supervision so students will not be permitted to enter the building.  Remember, to receive the full benefit of the instructional program it is important to be present and on time every day.   No early dismissals will be allowed after 2:45 p.m.  After this time we are preparing for dismissal and will need to be able to account for all children.  Parents/Guardians/Caretakers are not permitted in the building to wait for their children for dismissal.  The lobby must be free of all visitors during the dismissal process.

In an effort to support the saving of our environment and conserve our school’s resources, we will utilize the school’s website at http://www1.pgcps.org/samuelchase/, call out system, and Class Dojo in all grade levels for communication. It is currently under construction as we prepare for a new school year, but will be up and running by the week of September 6th

Breakfast and Lunch Information: I am excited to announce that Samuel Chase Elementary School has been enrolled in the Community Eligibility Program. By participating in this program, ALL STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE FREE BREAKFAST and LUNCH THIS YEAR!  Therefore, there is no need to complete an application for free or reduced lunches.

School Supplies/Uniform Policy: Our school supply list and uniform policy have been included in the envelope for your convenience and are available on the school’s website as well. Students should come to school each day dressed for success and equipped with the necessary supplies.  We are excited to offer Samuel Chase Spirit Wear this year.  Students will be permitted to wear Samuel Chase hoodies and sweatshirts as part of their regular daily uniforms.  They will also be able to wear any other Samuel Chase Spirit Wear on every Friday.  Spirit Wear order forms will be sent home in the first weeks of school.

Medications at school: We urge you to dispense all medications at home whenever possible. If medications must be taken at school, clearly defined guidelines must be followed. Any medications brought to school must be left in the health room where they are placed in locked facilities. All medications require a written permission form from a physician specifying dosage, child’s name, and the time the medication is to be given, with authorization for us to administer the medication at school. A “Physician’s Medication Authorization for Prescription and Nonprescription Medication,” Form PS-51, or a “Parent’s/Guardian’s and Physician’s Medication Authorization Form for Emergency Medication —Epipen—for Management of Acute Allergic Reaction,” Form PS-51 EPIPEN, or a “Physician’s Authorization for Medication by Inhaler/Mechanical Device,” Form PS-51/INH, must be on file for each individual situation. Upon taking the medication, the student signs a log indicating receipt of the medication.

Transportation: Information about bus routes, pick-up, and drop-off times will be mailed to your homes from the Transportation Office. You may also go online to http://www1.pgcps.org/transportation/to get information regarding transportation. If your child’s pick-up (A.M.) and/or drop-off (P.M.) address is different from your home address, please provide the alternate address, point of contact, and phone number to the main office as soon as possible.  Also, please review the A.M. and P.M. bus numbers with your child.  If there are any questions, please contact the school or the Department of Transportation at 301-952-6570 or via email at Transpor@pgcps.org. If your child has an alternate PM address, please notify the Main Office immediately.

Thank you for your commitment to your child's education. We look forward to seeing you on September 6th as we continue our journey towards excellence.  As always, please feel free to contact our office with any questions at 301-702-7660.

Educationally yours,

Nicholas A. Ohlson
