Findings from the Survey of Discretionary District Assessments

Carole Portas Keane, Ph.D.

In December 2015, the Assessment Cross-Functional Team was tasked with conducting a survey to gather input from teachers, school administrators, and instructional support staff about the utility of the district assessments currently in use throughout PGCPS and to ascertain whether schools were using additional assessments that were not known to district leaders.  Approximately 9,600 school-based employees were given the opportunity to participate in the survey, and 3,801 provided valid responses.  The report presents findings on how certain district assessments are perceived by respondents.  The findings were presented to executive leadership who then used the information to make decisions regarding the elimination or adjustment of those assessments for future school years.  Overall, two assessments were eliminated, but one was replaced with a more appropriate tool.
