What Are MAAPPs?
A MAAPP (Maryland Approved Alternative Preparation Programs) is Maryland’s alternative teacher preparation option. Degreed professionals entering from various career paths or recent college graduates with degrees in fields other than education may apply to these programs to begin their fact track to teaching. This program accelerates teacher training and credentialing for placement in critical teacher shortage areas. Because of the modified timeframe, alternative preparation programs are considered intensive and very challenging.
Who Are Resident Teachers?
Resident teachers are enrolled in a MAAPP, teach under a transitional Maryland Resident Teacher license, and are designated as “highly qualified” when placed in teaching areas aligned to their certification. After the successful completion of their MAAPP and state certification requirements, the teacher is eligible for Maryland State Department of Education’s Standard Professional Certificate (SPC-I). PGCPS resident teachers come from a wide variety of ages and experiences – from the recent college graduate to the mid-life career changer.
