Focused Kindergarten 

  • Kindergarten ELLs are taught in the mainstream classroom 
  • Inclusionary setting of instruction 
  • Mainstream teacher takes responsibility for language development 
  • ELLs have access to grade-level content 

Pull-out 

  • Excellent for beginning ELLs for oral language development and to build confidence 
  • Small group instructional setting 
  • Slower pace than mainstream classroom 

Plug-in 

  • Excellent for intermediate and advanced ELLs 
  • Grade-level academic support is provided to ELLs in the mainstream classroom 
  • ESOL teachers provide scaffolds and content-area language develepmont 

Co-Teaching 

  • ELLs of varying proficiency levels are taught in an inclusionary setting 
  • Ensures access to grade-level academic content instruction 
  • Expectations are higher for ELLs 

Structured Immersion 

  • Recommended for advanced ELLs 
  • Inclusionary setting of instruction 
  • Mainstream teacher takes responsibility for language development 
  • ELLs have access to grade-level content 

Sheltered ESOL Class (taught by one ESOL certified mainstream teacher) 

  • Recommended for newcomers or students with interrupted education only 
  • Pacing is adjusted to meet individual needs
