Business programs and courses are designed to expose students to basic concepts and possible career opportunities in the field of business. The curriculum allows students to learn and develop skills in computer software applications, entrepreneurship, principles of business and accounting, and business management. Students also have the opportunity to enroll in many exciting classes such as law, finance, web page design, and career research and development which will help them prepare for postsecondary opportunities in college and business careers.
 

First-Year Accounting (1 Tech Ed Credit)  
This course is a study of the basic accounting principles and procedures. It provides a background in accounting for further study at the college level. Students prepare, use, and interpret financial records and statements for personal use, a sole proprietorship, a partnership, and a corporation.

Accounting 2 (1 Adv. Tech Ed Credit)  
It is an advanced study of accounting records, principles, and procedures. This course is a must for students
who want to pursue a college major in Accounting, Business Administration, Business Management, or Marketing. (Prerequisite:  Accounting 1)

Business Law I and II (1/2 Credit) 
This semester course is a study of the legal rights and responsibilities of adults and minors in civil and criminal actions.  Emphasis is placed on laws as applied to ethics, contracts, sales, court systems, employment, and personal business transactions.  The concepts and skills will be useful in future business and personal situations.  This course is a good foundation for students who plan to major in business in college.

Business Organization and Management (1/2 credit)                                  This semester course is designed to help students understand the basic functions and fundamental principles of modern business-how it is managed, and how it operates. 

Computer Software Applications - MS Office (1/2 Tech Ed Credit)  
CSA is a semester course that provides students with opportunities to develop fundamental skills through the use of windows and the Microsoft Office Suite.  A step-by-step format is used to present the fundamentals of windows, word processing with Microsoft word, spreadsheets with Excel, and presentations with PowerPoint.  It provides students with a variety of methods to present their work in an attractive format.
 
 

Career Research and Development I (CRD I) (1 credit) (Prerequisite: Teacher Approval)

 
  • Students in grades 11 and 12 apply course content to practical work experience and develop academic, technical and workplace skills.
  • Students are provided instruction on Maryland’s career development model that includes career awareness and exploration.
  • Students will develop a career portfolio to demonstrate proficiencies in workplace readiness, personal financial management, personal growth and development, and employment experiences.
Students will be required to submit a senior project that will provide evidence of student achievement and showcase Skills for Success as well as academic and technical skills. 

Cooperative Career Education (CCE) (1 Credit plus 2 -3 work Credits-- satisfies completer for SY2009-2010)                                                                          This career experiential program provides high school seniors with an opportunity to earn up to four credits towards graduation.  CCE is designed to allow students to attend school in the morning and report to a supervised worksite in the afternoon.  Students develop a variety of job entry-level skills while working in the private sector, federal government agencies, retail stores, hospitals, universities, and daycare facilities.  Course content includes career planning, job search techniques, portfolio development, college exploration, money management, taxes, and human relations skills.   (Prerequisite: Application and Teacher Approval)

      COOPERATIVE WORK BASED/WORK EXPERIENCE    

School-to-careers program of study designed to assist students to make a smooth transition directly into the world of work or by way of post-secondary education. School-based instruction includes a wide range of employability skills training that prepares students for on-the-job work experience with private industry and government agencies. Students will concurrently enroll in school supervised work experience related to their career interests.

  • The workplace component is a mentored, on-the-job, work experience with a written, personalized training plan.
  • Work-based learning experience must be related to students’ career interests and based on a career assessment instrument.

Goal of the work-based learning experience is to expose students to authentic employment opportunities that link to students’ career interests, provide students with opportunities to explore careers, and develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. 

Entrepreneurship I (1/2 Credit) 
Have you ever thought about starting and running your own business?  Would you like to be your own boss?  Do you have a business idea, but aren’t sure how to get started?  Do you want to learn more about business ownership?  Then sign up for this exciting course that will help you prepare a business plan and get started on the road to a successful future

Entrepreneurship II (1 Credit)                                                                        This course is designed as an extension of Entrepreneurship I.  Students will plan, organize and manage all operations of the designated business.  Students will also be exposed to a variety of entrepreneurial operations including: computer simulations, audiovisual aides, role-playing, speakers and field trips. (Prerequisite:  Entrepreneurship I)

Financial Management Using Software Applications (1 credit)                     This is one of the two foundation courses required for all pathways in the Business Management and Finance cluster. This course provides students with the knowledge and practice they need to make informed financial decisions and is consistent with Maryland Council on Economic components.

Keyboarding 1 (1 Tech Ed credit) or (1/2 Tech Ed credit) 
This course provides students who have a desire to learn the fundamentals of keyboarding for personal and business use. Special emphasis is placed on building skills and techniques.

Job Search Techniques and Career Planning (1/2 credit)            This course includes career planning, job search techniques, and competencies required for successful employment.  Students will develop a career portfolio.

Office Technology (1 Tech Ed credit)                        This course trains students to demonstrate correct telephone techniques, set-up a manual or electronic filing system, file and retrieve information, operate office equipment, demonstrate knowledge of word processing concepts and equipment.  Emphasis is place on decision-making, problem solving skills to business applications and written and oral communications.  Students are required to create business documents using spreadsheet, database and/or word processing software. (Prerequisite: Keyboarding and Computer software Applications)

Principles of Business Administration and Management (1 Credit)             This is one of the two foundation courses required for all pathways in the Business Management and Finance cluster. This course provides students with the necessary knowledge to demonstrate and apply various theories of business.

Web Page Design (1/2 Tech Ed Credit)  
This is an introductory semester course to the fast growing industry of web site design and development.  This course will introduce web design concepts and skills, vocabulary, software applications, evaluation techniques and related social and ethical issues.  This project-based course will provide students with a solid understanding of the entire Web site development process.  Students will learn to use to design and publish web sites. Throughout this course, students will be encouraged to use the Internet to aid in the learning process. (
Prerequisite:  Keyboarding 1 and CSA)

Word Processing (1 credit)                                                                            This course provides basic understanding of the area of information processing.  Emphasis is placed in concepts, terminology, communication, and decision-making skills.  Upon the successful completion of the course, the students should be qualified for entry-level positions in information processing. (Prerequisites:  Keyboarding and Computer Software Applications)

Accounting and Finance (4 credits)                                                                        Required courses: Principles of Business Administration and Management, Financial Management Using Software Applications, First-Year Accounting, and Advanced Accounting. 

Business Administration Services (4 credits)                                                        Required courses: Principles of Business Administration and Management, Financial Management Using Software Applications, Word Processing, and Office Technology. Acquire the competencies for Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS).

Business Management (4.5 credits)                                                                    Required courses: Principles of Business Administration and Management, Financial Management Using Software Applications, First-Year Accounting, Entrepreneurship I, and Entrepreneurship II.
