Created by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, National School Lunch Week (NSLW) is a weeklong celebration of the school lunch program. The NSLW 2016 theme, “Show Your Spirit,” is about getting excited about the benefits of students consuming wholesome, healthy school lunches—fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, milk, and smiling students.
The Farm to School Program, developed by the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) will bring more Maryland-grown produce to school meals with Maryland Home Grown School Lunch Week. In addition to supporting local farmers, the program educates students about where their food comes from, how it is produced, and the benefits of a healthy diet.
Prince George’s County Public Schools Department of Food and Nutrition Services purchases locally grown produce throughout the year. For Maryland Home Grown Week, we will feature the following Maryland grown produce from nearby farms within our Elementary and Secondary Meal Programs:

Food Fun Fact - How much produce do we eat?
Baughers Orchard & Farm Market is located three miles west of Westminster, Maryland, on the corner of Maryland Highway 140 and Baugher Road. According to the website, they are proud of thier long tradition as a family farm dating back to 1904. Over the years, the farm has grown to over 600 acres in production, with over 200 acres available for Pick Your Own Fruit. Chesapeake Greenhouse is a local commercial greenhouse located in Queen Anne's County, Maryland. They grow 10 varieties of Lettuces and 9 types of Herbs. Their growing method is called Controlled Environment Agriculture (Hydroponics).
