The Eagle News is the tool we use to inform our parents and community of the great things that are happening at Overlook Elementary School, in the Prince Georges County School System and in our community. It is one of many ways we maintain an effective home-school connection. Featured are the columns Principal’s Corner, in which our principal, Mrs. Lowery takes the opportunity to address our parents and community and Grade Level News which gives parents an idea of what students are doing in the classroom. Other features include articles from Parent Institute, McGraw-Hill Children’s Publishing and other publications with tips on ways parents can support their child’s pursuit of education. Current and upcoming events occurring in the Overlook community can always be found in the Eagle News. Dr. Dedra Thomas, our counselor, serves as the editor.

The WKOV news team members for this school year are 4th and 5th Graders under the supervision of Mrs. Linda Johnson, Media Specialist. The broadcast team presents daily announcements, upcoming events, and review of character traits. During the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, for example, students participate in learning Spanish as Mrs. Johnson introduces Spanish words to the students. Students also report on Hispanic, African American and Native American influence in American culture as well as other historic events. The experience and opportunity has boosted confidence and self-esteem in our students on the news team and provided interest, curiosity and motivation for the listening audience.
