as the Thomas Pullen Performing Arts School Same Program, Same Goals Mission To provide each student with a rigorous academic program along with the opportunity to experience a broad spectrum of the arts. Each student will have the opportunity to develop his/her artistic talent in the area of his/her choice. Philosophy To provide an environment for students to develop their intellectual insight, leadership, and sense of community responsibility. Underlying this philosophy is the belief that sound training and discipline in the arts builds character, judgment, sensitivity, and insight important to good citizenship as well as academic and career success. • All students have exposure to a wide variety of the arts, and will be taught with an arts integration focus, with the goal to increase knowledge of a general subject area while concurrently fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of the fine and performing arts.
• At the elementary level each student will have the opportunity to explore and develop his/her interests in the arts through exposure to all art forms. In middle school, students select an arts “major” (choral or instrumental music, art, drama, or dance) in which they concentrate their artistic focus. |

Each Art Strand room is designed with state-of-the-art equipment and materials. Everything is intended to meet the needs of the students down to the smallest detail, from the high-tech music Midi lab to the extra cushioned floors in the dance rooms. Your music rooms have optimal acoustics, and visual arts rooms are fully stocked. All we need now is You!
One of the new features for this program is the new Midi Lab. What's a Midi Lab? MIDI/Music Technology Lab is where music students learn current music technology skills that they will need as future music teachers or performers in the 21th century. The goal of the Music Technology program is to prepare future music students to be knowledgeable and proficient in Music Technology. In the future most if, not all, music careers will contain some use of music technology. It is then vital for future music educators and professionals to have knowledge of music technology.

Creative and Performing Arts Attendance Areas
In the past, because the Thomas Pullen CPA School was the only K-8 program in the county, its attendance area was the whole county. Now, with the program replicated at Benjamin Foulois, the county has to be divided so that each school has an area large enough to sustain the program for years to come.
As with EVERY school in the system, students must attend the school in their boundary/attendance area. As with EVERY school in the system, out-of-boundary placement is not allowed. Students currently attending Thomas Pullen, but reside within the attendance area of Benjamin Foulois, are being reassigned to the attendance area school -- Benjamin Foulois.
So, the question on everyone's lips is: How do I know what my attendance area is? The answer: Areas south of Central Avenue will be reassigned to Benjamin Foulois. This approximation is very close but may not be exact in every case. To be exactly accurate, know that if the neighborhood high school is Largo, Douglass, or Wise (and all high schools going south) then the student will be reassigned from Pullen to Benjamin Foulois.
The map below better demonstrates the attendance areas of the two schools:

If you have any questions regarding attendance areas, or any of the information provided on this page, please don't hesitate to call us at 301-952-6772 or 301-952-6010, or 240-264-1732.

Building additions are an alternative to building a new school. An addition can add several hundred needed classroom seats or enhance facility usage by including auditoriums, gymnasiums, or cafeterias. The benefits of building additions are the cost savings compared to building a new school, and much of the work can be completed without disrupting classroom activity.
2009-2010 Addition(s)
• Laurel High School. Classroom addition and auditorium. Renovation and replacement school.
2008-2009 Addition(s)
• Potomac High School. Completion Date: January 2008. Classroom Addition. 600 seat capacity.
2007-2008 Addition(s)
• DuVal High School . Completed August 2007. Classroom Addition. 600 seat capacity.
• Parkdale High School. November 2007. Classroom Addition. 400 seat capacity.
Major Renovations
Major renovations include repairs or alterations to a school or facility that include major structural change. Standard repairs such as boilers or roofs are not considered major renovations. As is the case with Adelphi Elementary, a new school is designed and built over the bones of the old school.

• Greenbelt Middle School. Renovation and replacement school.
2007-2008 Renovation(s)
• Adelphi Elementary. Internal and external renovations ongoing.
