Music Department
Introduction

Welcome to the Instrumental Music Department of Prince George's County Public Schools. Located just east of Washington, DC, Prince George's County is the 18th largest public school district in the nation, serving over 127,000 students in almost 200 schools.

The Instrumental Music Instructional Program is committed to ensuring that all students have an opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills needed for success playing as a soloist and in large ensembles.

The Instrumental Music Program is a sequential and continual program of study. Students generally begin instruction in the elementary grades but may begin in middle school. Middle school students should be grouped by their level of proficiency whenever possible. Band and strings are year-long courses in both middle and high school. High school students may enroll in the same level band or orchestra class each year for credit.

Instrumental music classes are not designed for specific grade students but rather, students are placed in classes based upon their level of proficiency.

All Instrumental Music curriculum is designed to foster competence in playing proficiency, note reading, ensemble performance skills, and musical understanding and is aligned with the MSDE Voluntary State Curriculum/Essential Learner Outcomes.

The five learning outcomes include:

  • Aesthetic Education
  • Historical, Cultural, and Social Contexts
  • Creative Expression and Production
  • Aesthetic Criticism
  • Career Development
