Attendance and Tardy Information

Maryland State Law states students 5 years old and under 16 must attend school regularly.  Whenever absent from school, parents/guardians must provide the child with a written note upon their return to school.  The following are considered lawful absences;  death in the immediate family; hazardous weather conditions; illness of the student; lack of authorized transportation; quarantine; or any other emergency determined by the superintendent or designee.  Please remember, regular, punctual attendance is one of the many key factors that determines a students’ success in school!

Spring Book Fair - An Exciting Event for Students

A great big THANK YOU to S. Allen for coordinating the Book Fair for the last 8 years.  Kudos to the volunteers who assisted with this important event.  You are AWESOME!

·

Kindergarten Registration - 2012-2013 School Year

Families are asked to bring their proof of residence, original birth certificate (with parents names listed) and immunization record.  For Pre-K, you also need 2 current pay stubs or last filed tax return for both parents.  Please note that all Pre-K families in Mattaponi’s attendance area will register at Marlton Elementary.  All children who are five years old on or before September 1st must attend Kindergarten before entering first grade.  If you have any neighbors with children who fit this category, please inform them of registration.

7th Grade Registration - 2012-2013 School Year

All of Mattaponi’s 6th grade parents/guardians must come to the school by June 4th to register for the 2012-2013 school year.  If you do not register by June 4th, you must register at the newly assigned middle school in the fall.  Please bring your photo ID and your current, signed proof of residence (settlement papers, current lease/rental agreement, deed or property, mortgage statement or a current tax bill).

End-of-Year Behavior

It is my expectation that students should demonstrate courteous and respectful behavior until the last day of this school year. There will be consequences for students showing inappropriate behaviors in the classrooms, hallways, lunch, recess, PE, music, Media Center, on buses or at the bus stop.  Your support is greatly appreciated.

First Grade Reading Support Program Is A Hit!

What a wonderful visit we had from the St. Mary’s Auxiliary and the members of the Outreach and Hospitality Committee, including Father Soley from Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church.  These volunteers purchased books from our Spring Book Fair, provided a pizza lunch and gifted our First Grade students with pencils, erasers and book marks.  Best of all, they spent their morning breaking up into small groups and reading to our youngsters!  They have sponsored a yearlong Reading Support Program and the students anticipate their arrival each week.  We thank them so much for their time and graciousness for providing our youngsters with this wonderful experience!

      Internet Safety

It has come to our attention that students at Mattaponi are actively using social networking sites on the Internet, some without parental permission.  Social networking sites include Facebook, Bebo, MySpace, and many others. While these sites are a great way to keep in touch with family and friends, their use for children should be monitored at all times.  Talk with your child about the dangers and safety when using these types of websites.  Some parents use monitoring software on their computers to actually track their children’s computer use, and we at Mattaponi strongly recommend this type of approach to monitoring children’s Internet usage.  One example of this type of software is “Web Watcher”, which allows parents to remotely monitor and control all of the child’s PC activity over the Internet.  It can protect your children on-line, record email and instant messages sent from the computer, block and monitor websites, and limit computer use.  The cost is about $35.00 and is available at Staples.  President Obama was asked by a student what they could do to become president one day and he responded by saying “watch what you put on your Facebook page”.  Universities and perspective employers can now monitor these sites, so please give careful consideration to what you post.  You might think “not my child” but we request that you err on the side of caution, and check your computer’s history and websites visited.  You might be surprised to see some of the websites children visit and know about.  Hopefully, your diligence in this matter will protect your child when using the Internet.
